Govier Brothers Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday at Govier Brothers with a rosary to be recited at 7:30 p.m. Mrs. Downey was born April 17, 1908, to Eligh P. and Rachel Catherine (Powers) Kettleborough near Victoria Springs. She was educated at the Keota and New Hope Grade Schools. She attended Anselmo High School for two years. She married Paul A. Downey on April 17, 1928, in St. Paul's Catholic Church in Merna. During the first ten years of marriage, they lived on a farm about two miles northwest of the Downey Homestead in Dale Valley. In 1938, they moved their family to Anselmo where he operated a filling station and she took care of the family. In April 1940, they moved to San Diego, Calif. In 1949, they returned to Dale Valley to live on the Downey Homestead. In March 1996, she moved to the Sandhills Manor in Broken Bow. She was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church and a member of the Merna Altar Society. She was a 50-year member of the Dale-Ortello Extension Club. She enjoyed embroidering, tending her flower garden and visiting with people. Survivors include three daughters, Mary Kay (Mrs. William T.) Price of Broken Bow, Shirley A. (Mrs. Bernard Jr.) Phifer of Franklin and Ella Mae (Mrs. Gene) Mapel of Sparks, Nev.; three sons, James R. Downey of Merna and Richard E. Downey, both of Merna, and William "Mike" Downey of Naponee; one brother, Howard Kettleborough of Red Oak, Iowa; 27 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; two brothers, Elmer and John Kettleborough; two sons, Paul A. "Wayne" and Edward A., and one great-granddaughter. The Grand Island Independent, Jan. 3, 1999
