Read More	Deakins Killed In Traffic Crash That Claimed Five Lives Former Healdsburg residents were two of five persons killed Sunday in a tragic automobile crush on the Napa-Calistoga Highway near Napa. The former residents are Eslie Burt Deakin, 81, and his wife, Mabel Starr Deakin, 79. They died three hours after the crash at Parks Victory Hospital, Napa. The three occupants of the second car involved in the accident were killed instantly. They were Richard Rexroth, 25; Carl D. Henry, 25, and Paul E. McGrew, 33, all of Napa. Napa city police said that the accident, happened about 3:24 p.m. on the freeway within the city limits, when a Ford sedan, southbound, driven by one of the three youths, skidded over the white line and struck the Deakin car. Police, who are still investigating the accident to determine which of the three youths was driving the car, said that the driver apparently was speeding and lost control of the car. The Deakins’ car, driven by Mr. Deakin and northbound, was traveling between 30 and 40 miles an hour and had no chance of avoiding the crash and was struck broadside. The three youths were thrown from the car owned by Carl D. Henry and were killed instantly. The Deakins were trapped in their crushed car. They did not regain consciousness and died within 20 minutes of each other at the hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Deakin came to Healdsburg in 1910 and Mr. Deakin bought and operated a drygoods store on West street, next to the 8-Ball, until 1918, when he sold his store and moved to Dinuba with his wife. Mr. Deakin owned dry goods and furniture stores in Dinuba, Visalia and Faso Robles after leaving Healdsburg. Mrs. Deakin was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Timothy N. Mounts of Napa Valley, member of the pioneer Mounts family. Her husband was the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Deakin, long time Chiles Valley ranchers. Mr. Deakin was a 50-year member of the Masons and Mrs. Deakin was a member of the Order of Eastern Star. She is survived by her sister, Mrs. Edythe Maxwell of Napa; two nieces, Mrs. Virginia Tallman of Napa and Mrs. Margaret Tallman of Shelton, Conn.; and two nephews. Mr. Mount is survived by two brothers, Fred Deakin and Frank Deakin, both of Vacaville, and four nieces, Pearl Lowney of Vacaville, Mabel Conant of Hayward, Ruth Casteel of Kelseyville and Addie Moore of Richmond. A double funeral service was held for the Deakin's at the Treadway and Wigger Funeral Home in Napa.
