BURROUGHS, MABLE—Mrs. Mable Burroughs passed away at the Fillmore County hospital in Geneva Monday, July 11, 1966, at the age of 77 years and 26 days. She had been hospitalized only a few days. Mable Whitman, daughter of Charles and Carrie Whitman, was born on a farm south of Ohiowa, Neb., June 16, 1889. The Whitman’s were among the early settlers in that section. The mother died when Mable was one week old and Mable was reared by her grandmother, Mrs. Mary McPherson, in Geneva. Mable was married to Lee Burroughs at Broken Bow in 1912. To this union three children were born, Lester, Carrie and Martin. Lester died in infancy. Mr. Burroughs died in 1915, at Clayton Kas. And Mrs. Burroughs and children moved back to Geneva. Mrs. Burroughs resided in Geneva, keeping house for her son Martin until April, 1963, when due to ill health she entered the Fairmont nursing home. She was a good neighbor, mother and friend and made many friends during her long residence here. She was a lover of flowers and animals. Mrs. Burroughs was preceded in death by her parents, husband and infant son. She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Carrie Bassett of Yakima, Wash., her son Martin of Geneva, six grandchildren, one great-grandson, two nieces, Mrs. Donald Bopp of Spalding and Mrs. William Macek of Ravenna, and many friends. Funeral services were conducted from the Kritner-Farmer funeral home in Geneva at 10 a. m. Friday, July 15. Rev. Walter Larrabee, pastor of the Friend Bible church, officiated. Pallbearers were John R. Bixby, David Clark, Thomas Ewalt, Vaughn Fulton, Clarence Kelch and Ernest sole. Interment was in the Geneva cemetery. The Nebraska Signal July 21st,1966 page 9
