Description	:	Mack Charles McElroy, 91, of Ottumwa passed peacefully at 4:25 p.m. July 26, 2019 at Good Samaritan Society - Ottumwa. He was born December 26, 1927 in Moulton, IA to Arthur "Mack" and Grace McElroy. He married Bette Jean Parr on November 26, 1961 and she preceded him in death November 13, 2008. A graduate of Ottumwa High School in 1945 where he played football, he attended University of Northern Colorado playing a guard on the football team. A graduate of Ottumwa High School in 1945 where he played football, he attended University of Northern Colorado playing a guard on the football team. Chuck served in the U.S. Navy from January of 1946 to December of 1947, serving as a radio man. He started working for the Milwaukee Railroad on January 10, 1948. He retired after nearly 40 years as yard master on August 10, 1986. He was a member of O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion and NARV. Chuck loved to fish, travel and was an avid mushroom hunter. In his later years he and his wife became some of the biggest fans of OHS girls sports which he followed with his best friend, Charlie Rooker. He always took candy and gum for his girls and was known by many through the years as Grandpa. Mack never met a stranger and had a great love for those he knew. He always had a story or two to share and many jokes! Surviving is his daughter and caregiver, Connie (Dick) Pitzen, daughter, Gina (Michael) Edler; a son, Pat McElroy; daughter-in-law, Alicia McElroy; grandchildren, Amanda Comesano, Jenna Bates, Jarin (Kelly) Edler, Jared McElroy, Sabria (Andres) McElroy-Idarroga, Charlie Van Wardhuisen and Bridget Harbes; along with several great-grandchildren and his cat, Gidget. He was preceded in death by daughters, Cheri Staebler and Tonia West; a son, Michael McElroy; two grandsons, Justin McElroy and Sean McElroy. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Reece Funeral Home with Chaplin Doug McAntire officiating. Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery with military services conducted by O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion and Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars. Visitation will be open after 10 a.m. Tuesday with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.
