Missouri, Farmer: General Farm _______________________________ Davis County, Iowa Genealogy Society Library, from "The Bloomfield Democrat" Mahala Jane Morton Mahala Jane Hayden, one of Davis county's pioneers was born Nov. 20, 1855, in Richie county, West Virginia, on what was then known as Bone Creek. She was the daughter of Henry and Matilda Hayden. At the time of her death she was 89 years, 5 months and 5 days old. When 3 years of age she, with her parents, moved to Iowa, where she grew to womanhood. She received her education ion the rural schools of Davis county. She was married to James H. Morton of near Glenwood, Mo., November 15, 1874, and to this union six children were born to bless the home, Ollie Warren, who lives on the home place; Minnie Staggs, of Seymour, Iowa; Elmer Morton, of Great Falls, Mont.; George Morton, of Unionville, Mo. One daughter and one son, with the husband preceded her in death. Nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren, one brother, Albert Hayden, of Moulton, and two sisters, Margie Hill, of Ontario, Calif., and Mrs. Fannie Barnett, of West Grove, are also left to mourn her loss, besides other relatives and many friends. She has been a life long member of the Methodist church and throughout her life has been a consistent and faithful worker in the church of her choice. She was kind and considerate and her sunny disposition and pleasing manner drew her a wide circle of friends. Mrs. Morton was a pioneer resident of this section and she could recite many interesting happenings of years ago. She knew what hardships were and could recite from memory events which transpired during her life. She was an interesting person to talk to and it was a pleasure for her friends to listen while she recited from memory events of years past. Truly, a remarkable lady, she will be sorely missed by the family as well as innumerable friends. Services were conducted at the West Grove Church Sunday, April 29, at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev. J.A. Harp. Burial at the Bethel cemetery. Card of Thanks We wish to express our thanks to friends and neighbors for their help and sympathy during our bereavement.
