Mahlon Floyd was born at Lynchburg, Ohio, on August 23, 1842. At the age of six years he was left without a father when his parent was killed by a mob of drunken Negroes. In 1854, when he was twelve years old, Floyd decided to come west with an uncle. The trip was made by steamboat from Cincinnati down the Ohio River and up the Mississippi as far as Keokuk. The uncle and his youthful nephew left the river at Keokuk and traveled overland until they reached this section of Iowa. The two settled on a farm near Center Point and Floyd lived with his uncle on that farm until he was 21 years old when he came to Benton County. That was in the fall of 1863. In Benton County he worked for Edwin Spencer for eight years. At the end of that period, having decided to make Iowa his home for life, Floyd started out without aid to ear a farm for himself. On April 18, 1872, he was married to Martha Linderman. The newlywed couple settled down immediately to a life of toll and carved a large and prosperous farm from the wilderness, owning, at length, 300 acres of land. Floyd still lives on the old farm which is operated by his boys. He raised a family of five children, all of who are living – Bert M Floyd, C. E. Floyd, J. D. Floyd, Bertha A Floyd of Vinton and Moncie E. (Martha) DeWees of Center Point. Benton County News – Mahlon A Floyd, 89 years old, and early settler of Benton County, died late yesterday afternoon at his home north of Vinton in Taylor Township. Services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock at the Fry funeral home. Mr. Floyd was born Aug. 23, 1842, in Ohio. His aged wife is living. They were married 59 years ago last April. Children surviving are; Charley, Bert and J. D. Floyd, all farming near the old homestead. Miss Bertha Floyd living at home, and Mrs. A. D. DeWess of Center Point. child: Justus David Floyd
