Description	:	Mahlon Roy Stauffer passed away Friday, April 11, 2014, in Wichita. He was born April 10, 1920, in Duluth, Minnesota, the son of Lucy Jane Oliver Stauffer and Mahlon Roy Stauffer, Sr. The family moved to Newton, Kansas, where Roy graduated from Newton High School. He attended college at Emporia State, and entered WWII as a 2nd lieutenant in the U.S. Navy, flying an F6F Hellcat 310 off the carrier USS Wasp in the Pacific. Read More	Mahlon Roy Stauffer passed away Friday, April 11, 2014, in Wichita. He was born April 10, 1920, in Duluth, Minnesota, the son of Lucy Jane Oliver Stauffer and Mahlon Roy Stauffer, Sr. The family moved to Newton, Kansas, where Roy graduated from Newton High School. He attended college at Emporia State, and entered WWII as a 2nd lieutenant in the U.S. Navy, flying an F6F Hellcat 310 off the carrier USS Wasp in the Pacific. Wasp was sunk by Japanese torpedoes while Roy's squadron was airborne, but he was able to land on the carrier Hornet and continued to fly combat missions as the Navy Hellcats helped establish air superiority in the Pacific. After the war, Roy returned to Newton and partnered with his father in M.R. Stauffer & Son Construction Company with projects across the state, including many fine homes, churches, schools, and public buildings such as the historic Newton Depot. Roy became an expert estimator, working with large companies in Kansas, Colorado, and California. He was considered by many to be the finest "conceptual estimator" in the country. He was known for his accuracy and ability to predict and visualize a total project from mere photographs as well as architectural renderings. His last position was as Executive Vice-President of Lee Saylor, Inc., Beverly Hills, California, where he was the project estimator for some of the largest amusement parks in Europe, Asia, and the U.S. He also worked on projects for NASA. After retirement, he continued to do freelance work all over the country out of his home office. Roy was preceded in death by his parents, Mahlon Roy Stauffer, Sr., and Lucy Jane Oliver Stauffer; his first wife, Betty Corrine Stauffer; and his sister, Mary Virginia Stauffer Coleman. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Werner Stauffer; son: Gregg Roy Stauffer and spouse Kelly Keith of San Francisco; stepchildren: Kim and Rachel Holdeman of Walnut Hill, FL, Mark and Judy Holdeman of Salt Lake City, UT, Tracy and Sherrie Holdeman of Wichita, KS, 12 step-grandchildren and 2 step-great-grandchildren. Son Gary Robert Stauffer, born Jan. 15,1953, died Apr 14, 2014, and is survived by wife Louise and daughter Tabitha of Amity, Missouri.
