Mamie Carnes was married to Eli Lawson, on September 18, 1890, in Fairfield, Iowa. In the 1900 Census for Wapello County, Iowa, Eli D., age 43, and Mamie, age 32, were living in Ottumwa with their daughter, Mona M, age 6, and Mamie’s mother, Mary A. Carnes, age 67. Mamie Carnes was married to Eli Lawson, on September 18, 1890, in Fairfield, Iowa. In the 1900 Census for Wapello County, Iowa, Eli D., age 43, and Mamie, age 32, were living in Ottumwa with their daughter, Mona M, age 6, and Mamie’s mother, Mary A. Carnes, age 67. After Eli’s death, Mamie Carnes Lawson married William A. Carnal on September 20, 1906, in Ottumwa. In the 1915 Census for Davis County, Iowa, William and Mamie were living with their son Delbert Carnal in Soap Creek Township. There is a William and Mamie Carnal listed in the 1916 City Directory for Parsons, Kansas, and I believe this was them. Mamie’s obituary, which I have transcribed below, states that she was survived by her daughter Mrs. Mona Taylor of Parsons, Kansas, and Mona was living with her husband Alva Taylor in the 1910 Census for Parsons, Kansas. William either died or he and Mamie divorced, as Mamie Carnal married a Hiram Tull on December 25, 1916, in Wapello County, Iowa. That marriage appears to have been short-lived, as she married George H. Johnson on March 12, 1919, in Wapello County. Her name is shown on that marriage record as Mamie Carnes, and his is spelled incorrectly as George H. Johnston. In the 1920 Wapello County Census, Mamie's son Delbert Carnal was also living with George and Mamie and George's children from a previous marriage. In the 1925 Census, Mamie’s daughter, Mona, was married to Kenneth O. Carpenter, and Delbert Carnal was living with her and her family in Cherryville, Montgomery County, Kansas. By 1940, Kenneth and Mona had moved to Chicago, Illinois, where they are buried. Obituary From “Ottumwa Courier,” February 4, 1920: MRS. MAMIE JOHNSON Mrs. Mamie Johnson, age 49, of Agency, died yesterday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock at St. Joseph’s hospital. She is survived by her husband, G.H. Johnson, one son Delbert, at home, and one daughter Mrs. Mona Taylor of Parsons, Kansas. The funeral will be held Thursday afternoon at 3 o’clock from Daggett’s Undertaking Parlors, Rev. Walter Smith officiating. Burial in Round Point Cemetery.
