Mamie Gertrude Emma Thiel was born June 18, 1909, at her parents' farm home, south of Judson, the daughter of Adolf William Henry Julius and Edith Ida (Wagener) Thiel. She was baptized July 15, 1909, and received her religious teaching at Bethel United Church of Christ, south of New Salem. She attended an area grade school and lived with her parents on the farm until 1962, when they moved to a home in New Salem. Her father died that same year. In 1971, her mother became ill and became a resident at Marion Manor Nursing Home in Glen Ullin, where she resided until her death in 1973. On Feb. 12, 1971, Mamie was admitted to Elm Crest Manor at New Salem, where she lived until the time of her death. She was Elm Crest's longest living resident and she truly considered it her home. In the early years of her residency, when the home was considered a retirement home, Mamie helped in the kitchen, the craft room, and on Sundays, made sure all the hymnals were available and the area was organized for church services. She then considered it her job to put the hymnals away and to straighten all the chairs. As the years passed, and the home changed to different levels of care, Mamie's health also changed, enabling her to stay a resident for the past 35 years. A person of little needs, it was the simple things that gave Mamie the greatest pleasure, such as a bulletin board full of family pictures or the collection of pins given to her by family and friends-two of which she wore daily. A handshake extended to anyone who came near, whether it was a family member or a visitor to the home, gave her life meaning, as did a visit from someone who came often or someone Mamie saw only a few times throughout the year. Mamie is survived by her sister-in-law, Elda Thiel, New Salem; her nieces and nephew, Glenn (Judy) Thiel, Harvey, Betty (LeRoy) Moltzen, New Salem, and Peg Reuther, Mandan; eight great-nieces and nephews, Bruce (Paz) Thiel, Crystal, Minn., Darrick (Ann) Thiel, Bemidji, Minn., Delonnes (Russ) Klug, Dickinson, Tammy (Mike) Just, Gilbert, Ariz., Kevin (Shelly) Moltzen, Jamestown, Kendra Moltzen and her fiance, Mike Finck, Mandan, Micki (Blaine) Fischer, Hazen and Bobbi Reuther, Bensenville, Ill.; and 14 great-great-nieces and nephews, Danny Alvarado and Katherine Thiel, Crystal, Minn., Taylor Fankhanel and Miranda Thiel, Bemidji, Minn., Kristi, Mark, Matthew, Alex and Nicholas Klug, Dickinson, Thomas and John Meier, Gilbert, Ariz., Maya Moltzen, Jamestown, and Rodney and Sophia Fischer, Hazen. Mamie was preceded in death by her parents, W.J. and Edith Thiel; her brother, Harvey Thiel; and her niece's husband, Rodney Reuther.
