Description	:	Mannie Joseph Jerred was the fifth of six children born to Mannie A. and Alice Amelia Brelsford Jerred. The family was a farming family, begun in Minnesota with Mannie and Alice's marriage. The elder Mannie's parents were natives of England, as were Alice's. Read More	Mannie Joseph Jerred was the fifth of six children born to Mannie A. and Alice Amelia Brelsford Jerred. The family was a farming family, begun in Minnesota with Mannie and Alice's marriage. The elder Mannie's parents were natives of England, as were Alice's. Mannie Joseph was born in South Dakota, and moved with his family to Rock Co, Nebraska. The Jerreds returned to South Dakota, before Mannie Joseph was old enough to leave home. As a young man, Mannie was slender, of medium height with blue eyes and light brown hair. On December 28, 1919, Mannie J. had moved to Kansas City, Missouri and began attending "Rake's Auto And Tractor School". Less than a month later, he died of "flu pneumonia" while he was in Missouri, 500 miles away from his home. Mannie was likely a victim of the 1918 "Spanish Flu" pandemic which killed tens of millions of people across the globe from 1918 and for several years afterward. It struck the young and healthy, and victims sometimes died of pneumonia, secondary to the flu. It was notoriously fast in its onset. A person could get up from bed in the the morning, go to work, and die on the sidewalk on the way home. Even if Mannie's parents had been notified of his illness, it is quite likely that they would not have been able to get to him before he died. Five hundred miles was a long trip in 1920. Confusion arose during my research on Mannie. The Federal Census for 1920, taken at the Jerreds' home on 12 February, notes that Mannie Joseph was alive and attending "Rake's Auto And Tractor School"... 18 days after he died. Mannie never married. The rest of the Jerred offspring lived to ripe old ages.
