Manuel Domingos Ends Life After Long Period of Suffering From Ill Health Manuel Souza Domingos, 73 years old and a farmer for the last 45 years on Howell Mountain, east of St. Helena, ended his life this morning when he placed the muzzle of a shotgun against his forehead and pulled the trigger, blowing off the top of his head. The gruesome discovery was made by his wife and a daughter, who hastened to the milk house on hearing the sudden shot ring out. Coroner Theodore J. Treadway was called to the ranch and made a formal investigation of the suicide. Members of the family said Domingos had been in poor health for several years and that at times it apparently preyed on his mind, although he had never mentioned suicide. The rancher arose, shaved and breakfasted with his wife and other members of the family as usual this morning, and they said he appeared in good spirits. He then followed his custom of milking the cows, and on completing this chore he took the milk to the separating machine in the milk house. While in there, his eye apparently came upon two rifles and a shotgun standing against one corner. He picked up the shotgun and used it to slay himself. Domingos was a native of the Azores Islands. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Manuel, Jr., of Vallejo, and Lewis and Fred, of St. Helena, and three daughters, Mrs. Mary Eymard, Mrs. Lena Pestoni and Mrs. Minnie Bergh, all residing in the vicinity of St. Helena also. The remains are at the Ward Funeral Home in St. Helena. where it is planned to hold funeral services on Thursday.
