Berlin, the son of Robert Earl and Leta Ethel (Gilbert) Berlin, was born on September 16, 1920 in Pierce Township, Page County, Iowa and passed away at the Montgomery County Hospital in Red Oak, Iowa, on Monday, March 22, 2004. Manzel grew up in Page County attending the Goff Country School through the eighth grade. He then attended and graduated from Coburg High School. On December 25, 1949 he was united in marriage to Grace Hoyt at the First United Methodist Church in Shenandoah, Iowa. To this union a daughter Joyce and two sons Manzel and William were born. Manzel farmed all his life. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church. Manzel was an advocate for senior citizens, being a delegate to the Assembly for Older Iowa Citizens and helping seniors with their taxes free of charge. He was a member of the Cumberland, Iowa Senior Citizens. Preceding him in death were his parents, a son William Earl Berlin, a foster son James Herron, a sister Hazel Margaret Lorimor, and two brothers, Robert Wayne Berlin and Kenneth Merle Berlin. Survivors include his wife Grace of rural Essex, Iowa; daughter Joyce Witzenburg and husband Bob of Packwood, Iowa; son Rev. Manzel Owen Berlin and his fiance Jutta Smee and son Stephen of Blue Springs, Missouri; a grandson, Brian Witzenburg; six granddaughters, Brenda Daisy and husband Gil, Jeri Schultz and husband Jared, Penny Witzenburg, Mandy, Anna and Christy Berlin, a foster grandson, Jim Daisy serving in Iraq. Two foster sons, Steven Boydson of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Raymond Herron and Mary; their son, Jonathan of Exira, Iowa; three sisters, Vera Williamson of Eugene, Oregon, Daisy George of Holt Summit, Missouri and Clara Holmes of Shenandoah, Iowa; two brothers, Melvin Berlin of Red Oak, Iowa and Raymond Berlin of Essex, Iowa along with twenty two nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Funeral services where held on Wednesday, March 24, 2004, at 10:20 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Shenandoah. Words of comfort were given by the Rev. James Bubser and Rev. Manzel Owen Berlin. The organist was Becky Hoenshel and the soloist was Lance Hensen. The casket bearers were Glenn Confer, Donald Woodlin, Myron ROss, Carroll Gutschenritter, Carl Boylan, and Bernard Fischer. Carolyn Confer and Darene Gutschenritter were in charge of caring for flowers. Irene Bryte and Ruth Keyes were at the memory register. Ushers for the service were David S. Tackett and Leroy Hensley. Hackett-Livingston Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
