Tishue, widow of the late Joel Tishue, died at her home in Seward Sunday afternoon at the age of 95 years. She was born in Taylor county, Iowa, February 23, 1851, the daughter of Abraham Towner and Esther Voight Towner, and came with her parents to Nebraska in 1854, the year it was organized as a territory, and sixteen years before it was admitted to statehood. The Towners settled at Rock Bluff, Cass county. In 1869 Maranda Adaline Towner, later Mrs. Tishue, first came to Seward and went on up to Butler county to visit two brothers who had entered homesteads, one near where the town of Ulysses now stands and the other near the present town of Surprise. The W. R. Davis family, parents of Miss Nelle Davis, had also come from Cass county and settled here at Seward, whom she visited. It was as a result of this visit that she met Joel Tishue, who had started in Seward as a shoe cobbler and developed into the town's foremost merchant of his day. They were married in 1871, and this remained the home of Mrs. Tishue until the day of her death. To them were born two children, Jessie, now Mrs. W. E. Langworthy, and W. C., who died the past summer. The husband and father died in 1923. Mrs. Langworthy is now the only surviving member of the family. Mr. and Mrs. Tishue spent many winters in California, and after the death of her husband she continued the practice as long as she was able to make the trip. The accompanying picture was made by a Los Angeles paper on the occasion of one of her latest trips, wherein it told of the number she had made and of her remarkable activity for one of her years. At a meeting of the Chamber of Commerce on the eveing of April 14, 1942, Mrs. Tishue and three other pioneer ladies, all past 90 years of age, were honored as special guests. The others were Mrs. Anna Diers, Mrs. Sarah F. Merriam and Mrs. Rachel Woods. All were the widows of early day businessmen. Mrs. Tishue was the last of the four. Funeral services for Mrs. Tishue were held at the Chain & Wood chapel this (Wednesday) afternoon, conducted by Rev. Chas. L. Cody of the U. B. church. Burial was in the north cemetery.
