The town of Confluence, Pennsylvania, now located on what was then, his father's farm and mill site. While a small boy, the family moved to Iowa, the hardships of the trip, quite a bit of it being by steam boat down the Ohio river, causing the death of his mother, who was in frail health. He then made his home with an uncle on an Iowa farm until he reached an age when he could provide for himself, taking up the trade of shoemaking. Through industry, coupled with frugal habits, he saved the sum of eleven hundred dollars, and believing this sufficient to start business upon, came west to a newer country, deciding on Seward for a home. This was in May, 1869. Here he opened a very small store, when the town boasted of only three business buildings. He expected to deal only in hats and largely the product of leather, boots, shoes and gloves, but when he went to Nebraska City, which was by team in those days, the nearest wholesaling point, he was there prevailed upon to branch out further and buy prints, notions, etc. This, naturally, threw him in debt for a time and caused him considerable worry, but proved to be a wise venture as the situation called for a more generous stock and he was favored with an ever increasing trade, due, he felt, to the fact that he always tried to represent his goods truthfully. His first store was on the east side of the town square and his first home was immediately eat of that, which he built at the time of his marriage to Amanda A. Towner, April 20, 1871, where two children, W. C. Tishue and Jessie Tishue Langworthy were born. About seven years later he erected the first brick business building in town on the northwest corner of the square, erecting a second brick block on that corner and adjoining lots in 1887, which was about the time he retired as a merchant, but he was really in business on this corner, up to the date of his death. Mr. Tishue, being of a rather retiring dispostion, was not so well known to so many, as nearly fifty-four years' residence in one place might make possible with a person of different personality, but a goodly number of the older residents especially, have understood what were his virtues and were, and have, remained very loyal to him, he returning that loyalty in the fullest measure, many friendships, formed through business associations, and social nature, being as sound today as when formed fifty years or more ago. On January 8, 1923, while wintering in Long Beach, California, he suffered a stroke of paralysis of the throat, so returned to his son's home in Seward. His condition grew worse fast, death coming the morning of February 22, 1923, a merciful release. Funeral services were held at the home of Clee Tishue on Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Ralph Pinkham, pastor of the Congregational church. Masonic services were conducted at the house by Walter Beck, assisted by Rev. Pinkham, and also at the cemetery.
