Description	:	Henry Barnett was born in the Glassy Mtn TWP of northern Greenville Co, the son of Luther Pinckney Barnett & Mary Jane Fowler, a descendant of several generations of local white farmers, he was the 2nd son of 12 children. Read More	Henry Barnett was born in the Glassy Mtn TWP of northern Greenville Co, the son of Luther Pinckney Barnett & Mary Jane Fowler, a descendant of several generations of local white farmers, he was the 2nd son of 12 children. His father lived at the base of Hogback Mtn on what is now part of Hwy 11, and he owned half of a little mountain named Bird Mountain. Henry grew up in this "Dark Corner" area of NE Greenville County, an area that had became infamous for lawlessness and moonshining by the time he was born, he was said to have been a quiet, thoughtful churchgoing man who was gentle & kind to others and known by all and disliked by none. When Henry married, he chose the dark-haired Sarah Delilah Brannon of nearby Motlow Creek community in 1900, his family was said to have disapproved of the match (Sarah's mother had been sent to the insane asylum and insanity was believed to be hereditary). After the marriage, Henry did not have much contact with his family, they rented a farm in Campobello near Sarah's father Willie Brannon, & at some point he started working as a carpenter, moving where the work was. His daughter Mary Rebecca said they moved to Asheville one year while he worked on a hotel, another year they moved to Spartanburg. Henry was working for Fiske-Carter Construction Co. in Spartanburg when he filled out his draft card for the war in Sept 1918, but he was too old to be drafted, he was 45. His address was 184 Humphries St, Spartanburg, SC, his physical description was Medium Height & Build, Light blue eyes, Dark graying hair, no physical marks. He was one of the men who built Camp Wadsworth, the WWI training camp for soldiers outside Spartanburg near what is now Westgate Mall & I-26. By 1920, Henry was back living on a rented farm in Campobello, his wife Sarah had left him & was living in Spartanburg at Spartan Mills, but by 1930 they were back together again on Kingston St in Spartanburg & Henry was working as a carpenter at the Spartan Mill, his youngest surviving daughter Rebecca was also working as a spinner at the mill. In 1940, the couple were living with their daughter Marion Splawn's family in another house on Kingston St. at Spartan Mills, by then, Henry was developing advanced Alzheimer's disease. His wife Sarah died of uterine cancer in 1944 and he lived with his daughter Mary Rebecca Wright's family until his death in 1949. Aunt Bunt described her father as a kind, emotionally balanced & low-key man who was easy to get along with, she also said he was a practical man. I asked her once if her parents taught them sex education, she said they lived on farms so they saw animals being born & knew what sex was, and unlike many religious families, when they asked their parents questions about sex, their parents did not show any embarrassment or shame, they simply explained in a way the children would understand. Henry & Sarah sent all the children to public school for as long as they could benefit, all their children who survived were well-educated for their day & social class and did well in school. They were taught to work & to have a well-organized life. The girls were said to be excellent cooks & meticulous housekeepers. Henry & Sarah had 8 children born, only the 7th was a boy, HD, and he died young; Henry was devastated at the sudden loss of his only son in 1915 of what was probably meningitis. They also lost the last girl Arbutus in childhood to meningitis; both are buried at Motlow Creek Baptist Church where Sarah's father Willie Brannon is buried with 2 of his 3 wives. Aunt Bunt, who was the 6th child, said she was always sickly with asthma, and she believed that as her parents got older, their last-born children were less & less healthy; her mother told her she was running out of milk while she was still nursing her, she had to start buying milk. (We now know that breastfeeding imparts antibodies to the baby.) Bunt said she remembered her mother often sitting up past midnight in the rockingchair, rocking her to sleep to help with the asthma attacks which were worse in early evening, and she said her mother bought her cow's milk from a local farmer to replace her own milk, Bunt gave me the small white ceramic pitcher her mother bought for the milk which she kept in rememberance of her mother's love. She said money was very tight, buying the milk was a financial hardship for Henry & Sarah, but they did everything they could for their children. Bunt said her father's mental state deteriorated in the 40's, he would sometimes go walking & forget where he lived, the police came to know him & always brought him home. Henry Barnett died in his sleep as peacefully as he had lived. --Jeni
