Margaret was married on June 5, 1851 in Keokuk Co., Iowa to Bennett B. "B. B." Jacobs. Obituary: Mrs. B. B. Jacobs. Margaret, daughter of John and Mary McGahey, was born in Putnam County, Indiana. October 20, 1831, and passed out of earth life at her home in Hayesville, Sunday, August 5, 1917, aged 85 years, 9 months and 15 days, after an illness of many years, although she was confined to her bed only a few days. She with her parents, came to Keokuk county, Iowa, in 1847, and was united in marriage to B. B. Jacobs June 5, 1851, at the home of her parents just west of the present site of Hayesville. The ceremony being performed by Rev. Bennett Jacobs, grandfather of the groom. To this union lasting 66 years and 2 months, broken only by death, 11 children were born, two, Austin and William dying in infancy. The nine living children left to mourn the loss of a loving mother are Mrs. T. J. Griffin and Mrs. Alice Jacobs of Sigourney, Mrs. G. S. Griffin, Mrs. Henry Utterback, Alva Jacobs and Mrs. J. S. Chase of Hayesville, George Jacobs of Lancaster, and Belle and Joe at home with the bereaved father. Belle has patiently and faithfully devoted her entire life to caring for her parents and her name was the last spoken by her mother. There are 14 grandchildren, all living except Leslie Chase who preceded his grandmother in death 8 years ago. There are also 12 great grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Mary A. Werner of Eddyville, Iowa, two nieces Mrs. Nancy Gilbert of Marshalltown, and Mrs. Harvey Hardersty of Hayesville, and one nephew, John Everman of Sigourney. The aged husband and children are reconciled to their loss, knowing that it is her gain, believing that whatever is, is right, all things working together for good. She will be sadly missed by all the family as not one of these nine children ever came home, even in the wee small hours of the night but to find their mother waiting up for their return; and her greeting was, "God bless you, I love you." So we feel that our mother's life needs no comment from us—she has built a monument for herself. The highest praise we can say of her is, "She was a true mother, not only to her own but to all those who needed her." Funeral services were held on the lawn of her late home in Hayesville, on Wednesday, August 8th, and was attended by a large number of relatives and friends. An appropriate service was arranged, and a request carried out that had been made by Mrs. Jacob 20 years ago, that Mr. George Richardson of Hayesville give a reading at her funeral. This was followed by a solo rendered by Miss Marie Jacobs. Lydia Jacobs then gave a reading which was followed by a male quartette, music finished by four of Mr. Jacobs nephews. The choir, with Miss. Olive Jacobs as pianist, was composed of six of Mrs. Jacob's granddaughters and two grandson-in-law. The pall bearers were three grandsons and five grandsons-in-law. Obituary: B. B. Jacobs was born in Preble county, Ohio, August 18, 1828, and died at his home in Hayesville, Iowa, February 15th, 1918, after a short illness in his 90th year of age. He took to his bed only Tuesday last and every thing loving hands and care could provide was at his disposal, administered to by his ever attentive, thoughtful and willing children of whom there were nine survivors and most of them were at his bedside when his spirit took its flight. The subject of this sketch came to Iowa with his parents in the year 1848, settling for a time near Lancaster, not far from here. Soon after his time his marriage was solemnized by his grandfather, Rev. Bennett Jacobs, with Miss Margaret McGahey, at the time of her parents just west of the present town of Hayesville, and for more than 66 years this grand good couple lived together to enjoy the fruits of their mutual endeavors, the communion of their devoted children till death called the wife and mother to her reward only last summer. To this union were born 11 children of whom surviving are: Mrs. T. J. Griffin, Mrs. Alice Jacobs of Sigourney, Mrs. Geo. S. Griffin, Mrs. Henry Utterback Mr. Alva Jacobs, Mrs. John S. Chase of Hayesville; George R. Jacobs of Lancaster; Belle and Joe who were the constant companions of their father in his declining years. Two children died in infancy, Austin and William. There are also 13 grand children, 12 great grandchildren, one brother, one sister and three half-brothers living. B. B. Jacobs was not a man of mere ordinary ability or capacity in any sense of the word. His advice was sought and headed far and near by those who knew him best. His monument that will be most enduring and highly cherished will not be built by the hand of man; but the memory of his character will be revered and honored by his children and children's children for the goodness of his name he himself built by a list of honor, integrity and merit, a name that stood for strict uprightness of purpose that can come only from that precious record attained by a life long steadfast purpose of fair and square dealing with all mankind which stands for and makes true nobility as nothing else can. Not only do his neighbors and friends give to him this well earned title. "His word is as good as his bond," but his children can well and truly say he was a good and indulgent father who did not keep, his substance to serve himself a selfish purpose till he should be no more, instead he generously assisted on and all from time to time that opportunities might be the better taken care of by them from his whole hearted munificence out of the abundance of his many blessings. The present generation will know and generations to come will learn of the good and greatness of this man, the father and counselor, for it is said "A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches," yet, this man contrary to so many instances, had a name that his many descendants may well be proud to know as such and it is our home, a life of such unusual integrity and industry may be an example, a lamp to our fee, a guide that we may live to emulate the noble example he has set for us. B. B. Jacobs will be missed, we all know; but his name and memory will endure in this community as long as there is a history of Hayesville and Lancaster township. He was a man of few words, full of wisdom born of a wide experience, a close student of the Holy Scriptures and an excellent judge of human nature and one who lived out a full termed and useful life.
