AWTRY DIES-- Was 91 Years Old--Lived in County Since She Was 13 Years of Age-- Special to the Daily News. GALESBURG, IOWA. February 21--Mrs. Margaret Awtry, one of Jasper county oldest pioneers, died at the home of her son. Joe here yesterday afternoon at the age of 91 yrs. 3 months 18 days. Mrs. Awtry has lived in Galesburg since she was a child 13 years of age, coming here with her parents who were among the first settlers of Galesburg. When she and her parents came from North Carolina to their new Iowa home they were forced like all pioneers to endure the hardships which came with establishing a home in a new and uncultivated territory. When a young woman she was married to W. AM. Awtry. To this union 11 children were born. Three of the children preceded her in death. Mr. Awtry was one of the prominent farmers of the county and was well known to the old residents. He died 25 years ago [1898], and since that time Mrs. Awtry has made her home with her son, Joe. Mrs. Awtry was a high minded and noble woman, who stood for the things worth while. She was an active spirit in all the movements for the betterment of the community until her ill health caused by her old age prevented. She was a kind mother and true friend and one who will be greatly missed. Besides her son Joe, Mrs. Awtry leaves Frances Shutts, of Cheyenne, Wyoming; Dillis Awtry of Stockville, Nebraska; David address unknown; Mary Baldwin of Rosadale, Kansas; Emma Stoell of Scotch Bluff, Nebraska; Maggie Valentine of Reasnor, Iowa; her brother William McKinney of Newton, Iowa who is now in his 84th year, is ill and is not able to attend the funeral. She is also survived by two sisters, Rosa Farmer of Pleasant, Kansas & Ruth Landmesser of Gilman, Iowa.
