Mrs. Margaret Crawford, widow of W. D. Crawford and one of the pioneer residents of Des Moines county, passed away at Tustin, Cal., on January 8. Mrs. Crawford has been making her home in California for several years. Mrs. Crawford was one of the oldest settlers in Des Moines county. She was 92 years of age and came to this county when a girl and made this her home until she moved west. She was widely and favorably known and had hundreds of friends. She is survived by six children, as follows: Frank and Tom and Mrs. Nettie Hooten of Tustin, Cal.; David, at Middletown; Mrs. Charles Switzer of western Iowa and Mrs. Elizabeth McCash of Kansas. The remains of Mrs. Crawford will be brought back to this county for interment and the time for the funeral will be announced later. Transcribed by Paul French 12/17/04. MARGARET CRAWFORD She Leaves Forty-two Grandchildren and Sixty-nine Great-Grandchildren to Mourn Her Loss A remarkable and useful career was that of the late Mrs. Margaret Crawford, who died in California at the age of 94 years. She leaves forty-two grandchildren and sixty-nine great-grandchildren, who will hold her in reverent memory. The following sketch of Mrs. Crawford, prepared by a member of her family, is worthy of perusal: "Margaret Bartley Annadyce Chapman was born near Uray Kin-Karden-Shire, Scotland on September 1, 1824, and was of English parentage. The family removed to Graves End, England, and after a year they sailed from London for New York in the early part of September, 1832. Having encountered a storm at sea they were six weeks in making the voyage. After a residence of one year in New York the family moved to Kentucky, and later to Iowa, landing at Burlington September 1, 1843, and finally located on the farm now owned by E. A. Carden, northwest of Middletown. "On July 25, 1844, occurred her marriage to William D. Crawford, of Middletown, who died March 12, 1900. To this union were born eleven children, six girls and five boys, of which number six are living. Ten grew to manhood and womanhood and married. The living are: Mrs. Sarah J. Switzer, of Osceola, Ia.; Mrs Jeannette Hooten, of Los Angeles, Cal.; T. J. and F. P. Crawford, of Tustin, Cal.; Mrs. Elizabeth McCosh, of Admire, Kan.; and D. O. Crawford, of Middletown, Ia. Forty-two grandchildren and sixty-nine grand children also survive. "Mrs. Crawford was the third child of a family of thirteen children, three of which still survive, viz: Mr. Wm. Chapman and Mrs. Amy Whitmore, of Bonaparte, Ia., and Mrs. Victoria E. Mickelson, of Ashland, Ore. Several of this family have lived to the age of ninety. Daniel Chapman, her grandfather, lived to see over 101 years; her father died at the age of 95 and her mother was past 91 years. She lived more than sixty-two years in the state of Iowa, coming here when the bleak prairies were dotted around the edge of the timber with a few log cabins, and the principal part of the population was roving bands of Indians. "At that early day herds of deer and howling wolves were a common sight, and, occasionally, a straggling buffalo passed that way seeking for the herd with which he once roamed the naked prairies. "Grandmother Crawford withstood many hardships during the early days. She was a consistent and devoted wife, a kind and loving mother and one on whom all friends and neighbors were first to call in times of distress and in need of help and sympathy, none knew her but to admire her good and noble qualities. The latch-string of her humble cabin was always out to the weary and benighted traveler, of which there were many, to spread their blankets on the cabin floor for rest and protection from the bleak cold and severe winds of the open prairies. "In the fall of 1905 she went to Tustin, Cal., the beautiful land of sunshine and flowers, to make her home, and where, on January 8, 1918, she quietly passed away after a few weeks' illness at the age of 93 years, 4 months and 8 days. May God bless and protect her precious memory."
