Black John was born Jan. 10, 1768, the eldest son of William McClung "Grandfather Billie," was a blacksmith and hence his nickname. He and Jane married Mar. 14, 1793 and had 10 children, of which Margaret was fourth. They lived about a mile east of Rupert, W. Va. Jane died Sep. 9, 1828 and John died July 20, 1850.
