Editor Greenbrier Independent: In chronicling the decease of Mrs. Susan Osborne, of Dennis, Greenbrier county, which occurred at 9 p. m. last Saturday, the natural grief so inseparable from so sad an occasion is tempered in her case by the reflection that death to her meant a happy release from intense and prolonged sufferings, borne with a patience and resignation touching to witness. Mrs. Susan Osborn was born Aug. 29th, 1827. She was the daughter of the Rev. Sam'l Martin, whose sons. Perry W., John Mc., Jas. E. and Sam'l T. Martin, are so well known in this part of Greenbrier. She married, Feb.24th, 1852, James H. Osborn, of Little Sewell. The young couple began housekeeping near Meadow Bluff, where eight children were born to them. Of these four died in infancy, and but one son survives - Samuel W. of Dennis. Mr. Jas. Osborn died in Sept'r, 1867, and his widow again married in 1877 Mr. W. H.Crane, of Big Clear Creek. No children blessed this marriage, and Mr. Crane died about 1887. Since then Mrs. Crane was generally known as Mrs. Osborn. Mrs. Osborn had suffered from a complication of diseases for many years, rheumatism in an acute form being one of her most distressing troubles. For ten years she was an invalid, six of these years bedridden and helpless, despite the efforts of the best obtainable medical skill. During the latter years of her life she made her home with her son, Sam'l W., whose entire devotion and most loving care undoubtedly helped prolong and where the chiefest comforts of her lingering existence. To Miss Sarah Harper also a tribute of faithful service is due, but it would almost seem invidious to mention one where all friends and neighbors were so kind. Mrs. Osborn was a lifelong member of the M. E. Church, South, and fortified by a certain religious hope and with a sincere trust in the Almighty. One she bore the trials with which God saw fit to afflict her with an exemplary patience and sweetness and an uncomplaining fortitude that won the admiration and reverence of all who knew her. But the long fight is done, victory has come at last, and she is now at rest! Her mortal remains were interred on Monday, the 7th Instant, in the old burying-ground at Perry W.
