Gordon, near Corning, Iowa, September 24, 1898, aged 72 years, 4 months and 17 days. Deceased was the widow of the lamented Dennis White, whose death occurred November 23, 1883, with whom she was united in holy matrimony at their childhood home, Morgan County, Ohio, on October 9, 1845. Together they removed to Adams County, Iowa, in October 1860, locating near the village of Nodaway, Iowa. The beautiful farm they together improved, yet stands as a monument to the joys and vicissitudes of Margaret and Dennis White, as a reminder of generous pioneer hospitality. Margaret White was an exemplary member of the Christian Church. Her daily life and conversation nobly attesting to the rich genes of her mind and heart. Intellectually she was strong and vigorous; in disposition, generous, patient, modest, always bright and cheerful, even through her long and severe illness, sciatic rheumatism, that dreaded disease that tortures to the utmost, even until reason is dethroned; through nine long months of dreadful suffering could not force one murmur of complaint from the lips of Grandmother White. To her home, her family and her church she was thoroughly devoted, and in her unbounded faith she died as she had lived, without one shadow of doubt as to her immortality. Of her it may well be said "She fought a good fight; she kept the faith", and when her great loving heart was stilled forever her face shone with heavenly peace and glory as her freed spirit ascended to it's home. The funeral services were held at the residence of H.L. Gordon, and were conducted by Father Peregrine, the pioneer pastor of the Christian Church of Brooks, assisted by Rev. Rowley, of Brooks, Rev. Crewdson of Corning and Father Towner. The industrious, helpful, godly life lived by Sister White, her triumphant entrance into the home beyond, were feelingly presented by her venerable pastor as an example of the Christian's victory over life and death. A quartet of sympathizing friends rendered several appropriate and touching hymns. Many beautiful floral offerings attested the devotion of loved ones, then she was lovingly laid to rest by the side of her husband in the Nodaway Cemetery, near the old homestead. Five daughters survive Sister White and were permitted to attend their mother during her painful illness, which they did with unrequiting care and devotion. Lewis White, a stepson, of Sheridan, Misssouri, because of ill health, was unable to be present at the last sad rites attending the death and burial of his friend and counselor. The grandchildren all loved and honored their grandmother and feel that her memory will be a holy benediction over their lives.
