The Alleganian Cumberland, Maryland Wednesday,February 10, 1869 Distressing Casualty; "A correspondent at Westernport, whose communication came to hand too late for last weeks issue, gives the following particulars of the recent disaster by which Mrs. Margaret High, a highly estimable resident of that village, consort of Mr. J. D. High and daughter of Mr. Michael Kalbaugh, lost her life: About 9 o'clock on the morning of the 27th, while making fire in one of the rooms on the ground floor of her dwelling, Mrs. H. made use of kerosene to kindle it speedily, and in pouring the fluid upon the kindling wood the vapor ignited, and communicating with the oil in the can caused an explosion, instantaneously enveloping the unfortunate lady in flames. She at once ran into the street and alarmed the neighbors, who promptly went to her assistance, but did not succeed in smothering the flames until her limbs and a portion of her body were dreadfully burned, and she had sustained internal injuries of a fatal character. She suffered the most excruciating agony until about 3 o'clock on the morning of the 29th, when death came to her relief. She leaves two infant children, who lose the care of a devoted mother; and a large circle of relatives and warm personal friends mourn her sudden and afflicting death."
