Margaret Eileen Witzel was born November 23, 1938, in Osage, Iowa, the daughter of Arthur and Esther (O’Brian) Witzel. She graduated from Osage High School in 1957. She moved to Iowa City and was employed with State Services for Crippled Children. She married Evan Dale Clemmens on August 31, 1961, at United Methodist Church in Coralville. They lived for 42 years near Springdale in a house on 120 acres, where they raised their two children, Scott and Lisa. She enjoyed quilting, sewing, tatting, embroidery, flower pressing and doing calligraphy. She and Evan enjoyed gardening and had a huge garden. She was also was a wonderful cook baking cookies and bread. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She was active in the Springdale United Methodist Church. She was a member of the UMW, Self Culture Club, sang in the church choir and also directed the children’s choir. She sang at many funerals and weddings. She taught children’s Sunday School classes for 24 years and liked to play the guitar. Later she belonged to the River Community Church, the Home Bible Study Group, and helped to prepare meals at The Ronald McDonald House on a monthly basis. Margaret was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 1997, and in 2004, they built a new home southwest of Iowa City, until 2013, when they moved to The Gardens Assisted Living in Des Moines to be close to their daughter, Lisa. Margaret spent her final years working on her family genealogy on both sides of her family. In the last year of her life, she compiled and wrote her own biography to leave for her family. Surviving are her husband, Evan; one daughter, Lisa (Scott) Lewis of Ankeny; one son, Scott (Jill) Clemmens of Oskaloosa; four grandchildren, Sarah and Amanda Lewis, Jeremy (Hannah) Bower, and Jordan Bower; two great-grandchildren, Jayana and Brooks Bower; four nieces; and four nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters, Donna Cashen, Barbara Grinstead, and Frances Witzel and one brother, Clifford Witzel. The family would like to extend a thank to all friends and family who kept in touch with her while at The Gardens and to the Hospice nurses who cared for her and the Gardens staff who made sure she was comfortable in her final days.
