CARROL DAILY TIMES HERALD - Tuesday, March 13th, 1984 - Bayard — Margaret Kennedy, 88, a retired school teacher, died Sunday, March 11, at the Bayard Care Center Nursing Home. Rite of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 14, at St. Patrick church in Bayard with the Rev . Richard Bergman as celebrant. Burial will be in Willow Township cemetery. Casket bearers will be Clair Crosier, Jim Murrane, Joe Murrane, Matt Murrane, Jim Hagan and Dean Curl. A rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Ohde Funeral Home in Bayard. Mrs. Kennedy is survived by son, James Kennedy, Cedar Rapids; a daughter, Mrs. Harold (Margaret) Woltjer, Marshalltown; five grandchildren: Michael Woltjer, Marshalltown; Peri Ann Woltjer, Marshalltown; Mary Wilkin, Indianapolis, Ind.; Rebecca Hollingsworth, Prairie City, Iowa, and Cynthia Dettman, Cedar Rapids, and two nieces: Irene Shaw, Pocahontas, and Loretta McCurnin, Scottsdale, Ariz. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband in 1965 and a brother, John. Mrs. Kennedy was born February 7, 1896, at Clermont, Iowa, a daughter of Nicholas and Margaret Lacey Rafferty. Her parents died when she was a young girl and she was sent to a boarding school in Sinsinawa, Wis. There she took normal training and later came to Bayard to teach in rural school. She was married to James L. Kennedy of Bayard. They made their home in the Bayard area where her husband farmed. She taught in the Bayard school for many years. Over the years, she spent time at the University of Iowa, Iowa City, earning a four-year teaching certificate. She taught math and history in Bayard High School until 1961 when she suffered a broken hip. She moved to the Bayard Care Center Nursing Home in 1975. She was a member of St. Patrick parish, the Altar and Rosary Society, the American Legion Auxiliary and the Bayard Library Board.
