BAYARD NEWS - Thursday, July 29th, 1965 - James L Kennedy, one of the real pioneers of the Bayard community, died Tuesday morning in the Soldiers Home in Marshalltown. He had spent all of his life in the Bayard area until his health failed. He spent the last years of his life in the Home. The 75-year-old veteran of the First World War was born in Greene county May 30, 1890. Following graduation from the Bayard high school, Mr Kennedy taught rural schools, farmed, was a car salesman, and operated his own garage in Bayard. He entered the United States Army July 23, 1918, and became a non-commissioned officer November 25, 1918. He received his discharge at Camp Dodge March 19, 1919. He has been a member of the Bryan Mercer post of the American Legion and the St Patrick's Catholic church in Bayard. Mr Kennedy is survived by his widow, the former Margaret Rafferty, who now lives in Jefferson; a son, James, Jr, of West Des Moines; and a daughter, Margaret Woltjer of Marshalltown. There are five grandchildren; a sister, Mrs Gertrude Mahoney of Janesville, Wisc; and a half sister, Pauline O'Neil of Jefferson. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, John and Leo, and a sister, Mrs Tom (Mayme) Lyons. A rosary was prayed in the Starling Funeral Home Wednesday evening. The services were scheduled for 10 am today in St Patrick's Catholic church with the Rev Fr James Daugharty of Coon Rapids in charge. Joseph P Ewing will serve as organist. Interment will be made in the Willow cemetery The American Legion will conduct military grave-side rites. Serving as honorary casket bearers will be Joe P Murrane, Guy F Hidlebaugh, Arthur Moylan, Harry Howe, AM Robinson and Elwood Ebersole. Acting casket bearers will be Jack Davis, Jim Murrane, Jr, Leonard Siedhoff, Jim Hagan, Joe W Murrane and Merle Kent 5hawd.
