Jones (From marriage record at Dodgeville, Iowa County, Wisconsin, on March 22, 1870.) ~~ 'The Madisonian,' Virginia City, MT 15 December 1922, page 1 (excerpted): Sheridan, Dec. 15.-- The death angel has again visited the home of another worthy pioneer family and called Mrs. Margaret Ellen Jones to her home on high last Saturday evening December 9, 1922, at 6:30 o'clock, after a lingering illness that had confined her to her home and bed since last March. Last August she was removed to the home of her daughter, Mrs. E. N. Leveque in Bozeman, where she was given every possible attention by her daughters and granddaughter, Miss Mary Bigham. While the attending physician could give no encouragement for her recovery her children were untiring in their efforts to make her last days with them comfortable. She passed peacefully away on the above date. The remains, accompanied by Mrs. Conger, Mrs. Husted and Miss Bigham, arrived on Monday morning's train and were met here by Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Jones and Mr. and Mrs. Evan Jones of Twin Bridges. Funeral services were held from the Methodist church at 2 o'clock and were largely attended by many old-time friends of the family, many who had known the deceased from the time she came to Montana. Rev. Cunningham delivered an appropriate sermon. The casket in which the sainted white haired mother and grandmother rested so peacefully was covered with loves floral tributes from her children and friends. Interment was made in the Sheridan cemetery, where the husband and eldest daughter, Addie, who had preceded her to the great beyond, are sleeping. Mrs. Jones was a native of Ohio. She was born February 4, 1848. She removed to Wisconsin, where she married to Evan J. Jones March 22, 1870. The young married people spent their honeymoon in crossing the plains to Montana, arriving in Virginia City April 29, 1870, where they resided for awhile before removing to the Ruby valley, where they engaged in farming and where the family resided until the death of Mr. Jones 12 years ago. Six daughters and three sons were born to Mr. and Mrs. Jones, who grew to young manhood and womanhood in Madison county. She was also a mother to her five grandchildren, Mary, Ray, Earl, Ralph and Elmer Bigham, who were deprived of a mother's love and care when they were small. After the death of her husband her son Evan purchased the Frank Wright property on Mill street, where she enjoyed the comforts of life in her declining years. Two years ago last fall she, accompanied by granddaughter, Miss Bigham, went to California to spend the winter with her daughter, but the old home ties were too sacred for her and she returned home. She retained her mental faculties until her final illness and could relate many interesting events of early days in Madison county. It was her proud boast that her late husband cast his vote for Brandon (Montana) for the seat of territorial government when the capital fight was on between Brandon and Helena in the early seventies, when Brandon lost by one vote. She was a kind friend to her neighbors and was ever ready to lend a helping hand in sickness and distress in the early days when the service of a professional nurse could not be obtained. Deceased is survived by five daughters, Mrs. C. A. Culforth of Lakeside, Calif., Mrs. W. F. King, Mrs. Ernest Leveque of Bozeman, Mrs. A. J. Conger of Roundup, Mrs. Mary Husted of Miles City; three sons, David Jones of Absarokee, Mont., T. J. and Evan E. Jones of Twin Bridges. Nineteen grandchildren also survive her. A devoted mother and grandmother is gone. The children realize that the last of the old home ties in Sheridan is broken, but they know her sufferings are over and she is at rest "in that land of light and glory. The family moved to Dodgeville, Wisconsin, where Margaret met Evan. They were married on March 22, 1870 and spent their honeymoon traveling by train to Salt Lake City, Utah, and from there by stage coach to Virginia City, Montana. Evan and Margaret were the parents of nine children, six girls and three boys, David, Addie, Maggie, May, Tom, Evan, Viola, Jennie and Ena."
