Read More	Margaret Ellen Kennedy May 13, 1913 - March 11, 2007 Late Sunday afternoon, March 11, 2007, Margaret Ellen Kennedy slipped away. She was a resident of Mesa Manor Rehabilitation Care Center in Grand Junction, Colorado. Margaret's passing marks the end of an extraordinary life spanning 93 years of witness to history; from the devastation of the Great Depression to the explosion of science and technology of the 21st century. Devoted to her family, her Catholic faith and her undaunted independence, Margaret's life was the definition of survival. Margaret was born on May 13, 1913 on a farm south and east of Soldier, KS, to George A. and Frances (Hurla) Kennedy. Margaret was raised in the Soldier area, attending High School in Holton, KS and graduated from the Ursuline Academy in Falls City, NE. Margaret taught the first through the eight grades in one-room schools in eastern Kansas for ten years. She taught one year on the Potawatomi Reservation in Jackson County; four years at Sunny Slope in Soldier, Jackson County; four years at Twin Rose School in Netawaka, Jackson County, and one year in Roseville, Shawnee County, KS. She followed the rest of her family in a move to western Colorado in 1941. She began working for Mountain Bell on November 29, 1942 in De Beque, CO as Contract Manager and was promoted to Chief Operator in 1944. Margaret transferred to Grand Junction, CO in December 1955 as an Analytical Clerk; she was promoted to Assignment Clerk for the Grand Junction district office in 1957; then completed her career as a Network Technical Clerk in 1978; retiring after 35 years of service with the phone company. While Margaret never married, she led a full life committed to her family, friends and support of the Catholic Church. She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Grand Junction for decades. After her retirement, Margaret moved back to De Beque, CO for a short time to assist her brother in caring for her elderly Mother until her death in 1982. Margaret then returned to Grand Junction and led a fully independent life for many years. In the late 1990's, at the age of 86, she cared for her former landlady for several months, driving to her friend's home every day. Margaret enjoyed cultivating houseplants, crochet work and corresponding with her many friends and family members. She particularly enjoyed caring for the many hummingbirds that she lovingly tended to for years. Margaret was preceded in death by her father, George Aloysius Kennedy; her mother, Frances (Hurla) Kennedy; her brother, George J. (Bud) Kennedy; and her sisters, Sister Mary Blaise Kennedy, OSU; Josephine M. Dunn; and Lois F. Butterfield. She will be greatly missed by her many friends and family. A memorial Mass will be held in Denver at a later date.
