Description	:	NELLYSFORD – Margaret Coleman Garth, retired teacher and former owner and operator of a restaurant and retirement home, died Thursday in a Charlottesville nursing home. A native of Nellysford, she was the daughter of the late Montague Woods and Lisa Walker Coleman. She received her teaching certificate at State Teacher’s College in Harrisonburg, now James Madison University, in 1919, and did graduate work at University of Virginia. Read More	NELLYSFORD – Margaret Coleman Garth, retired teacher and former owner and operator of a restaurant and retirement home, died Thursday in a Charlottesville nursing home. A native of Nellysford, she was the daughter of the late Montague Woods and Lisa Walker Coleman. She received her teaching certificate at State Teacher’s College in Harrisonburg, now James Madison University, in 1919, and did graduate work at University of Virginia. She taught school in Waynesboro for a year and in Wilson, N.C., for two years before returning to Nelson County. She taught school and served as principal at the former Blue Ridge Elementary School and the former Greenfield Elementary School and after several years she moved to Rockfish Valley Elementary School where she taught seventh grade and was assistant principal until she retired in 1962. Mrs. Garth opened her restaurant, Tuckahoe Tavern, in her childhood home in 1949. She did most of the cooking as well as the business operations. In later years the restaurant was opened only for Sunday dinner. In 1960 she opened Garth’s Retirement Home. She operated both businesses until she was seriously injured in an automobile accident two years ago. She was a lifelong member of Rockfish Presbyterian Church where she served as organist for more than 40 years, a member of Nelson County Chamber of Commerce which named her outstanding citizen of Nelson County in 1975, a member of Nelson County Teacher’s Association, Nelson County Democratic Committee and Nelson County Garden Club. She was a past “Friend” of Nelson County. Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Rudolph (Nancy) Small Sr., of Nellysford; two nieces, Esther Coleman and Jean Strafford; two great-nephews, Jay Strafford and John Strafford. A service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday in Rockfish Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev. Dinah Ansley and the Rev. Vernon Maxa, with interment in the church cemetery. Active pallbearers will be B.J. Clark, James Ballowe, L. F. Payne Jr., George Nicklas, W. W. “Buddy” Martin, John A. Koon, Orville Karicofe and Rudy Small, Jr. Honorary pallbearers will be members of Rockfish Presbyterian Church and other friends. The family suggests memorial gifts be made to Rockfish Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 278, Nellysford, Va. 22958. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 this evening in the Waynesboro chapel of Etter Funeral Home. (News-Virginian)
