Jefferson Herald - Thursday, February 12, 1925 - Mrs Quinlan O'Brien, known better as "Grandma" O'Brien passed away rather suddenly at her home in Bayard, Iowa from a sudden attack of heart trouble on Sunday morning Feb 1st. She was born on Bally Donegan Bay, on the west coast of County Cork, Ireland, Feb 3rd, 1838 where she grew to young womanhood. Soon after her marriage to Quinlan O'Brien they set sail for America, traveling on the first steamship that ever crossed the Atlantic from Ireland. They settled in the copper region of northern Michigan where Mr. O'Brien took up work in the mines while his wife conducted a boarding house. After twelve years in Michigan she volunteered to come to Iowa with the family of small children and make a home on the Iowa prairies and have the husband and father remain at work in the mines and send his net earnings to the family with which to invest in the Iowa home and make improvements. The family settled in Greene county, Greenbrier township, ten miles southwest of Jefferson. Here for eight years with the aid of at family of small boys and John Lewis now of Bayard, but then a New York lad who had come west to visit his uncle Nathan Harrymount, she managed a large farm with only an occasional visit from the husband and father. After the family of children grew to manhood and womanhood, Mr. and Mrs. O'Brien moved to Bayard and Mr. O'Brien passed away in 1907 after which time "Grandma" lived alone. Three sons, Wm. J. of Bayard, Iowa and Patrick and Quinn O'Brien of Chicago, IL., besides several grandchildren and many friends and neighbors are left to mourn the loss of this good woman. Funeral services were held Tuesday, February 3 on the 87th birthday of "Grandma," at the St. Patrick's church in Bayard. Interment was made in Willow cemetery by the bodies of her husband and five sons.
