Description	:	Margaret "Babe" Hazel Williams, 94, life long Helena resident passed away December 21, 1999, at St. Peter's Hospital. Her residence was 1915 6th Avenue. Babe, born March 24, 1905, was the daughter of Margaret (Sullivan) and Joseph Spurzem. Her father, dean of Helena law men in the first half of the century, served most of his adult life in various capacities of law enforcement, which included 18 years as Helena's chief of police in the early 1900's. Babe, born March 24, 1905, was the daughter of Margaret (Sullivan) and Joseph Spurzem. Her father, dean of Helena law men in the first half of the century, served most of his adult life in various capacities of law enforcement, which included 18 years as Helena's chief of police in the early 1900's. Her paternal grandparents, Wilhelmina (Lutz) and Peter Spurzem, a blacksmith, were Helena pioneers. They lived in the early 1870's in a log cabin located at the site of the church on the corner of Rodney St. and Ninth Ave. Babe's father told stories of growing up in the late 1800's, which included wrestling with American Indian boys from tribes who would camp nearby at springs located on what is now Davis Street. Babe attended Helena Catholic schools. As a teenager she was one of the first Helena women to drive an automobile. She was employed at W. F. Woolworth and later as an operator for the Telephone Company prior to her marriage. On June 13, 1931, she married Thomas E. Williams. Tom spent most of his working career with the Helena Fire Department, retiring as senior captain in 1968, then working with the Montana Revenue department until 1981. They had a son, Budd and a daughter, Nancy. Babe's life centered around her family, home and the family cabin. Her family was the love of her life. Participating in the raising of her grandchildren and great grandchildren and attending their activities gave her great pride and enjoyment. She enjoyed her yard and flowers. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Lenore and brothers, Joe, Bud, Tom and Bill. She is survived by her husband; son and daughter-in-law, Budd and Diane Williams; daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Boyd Bawden; grandchildren and spouses (together with their children), Kim and Mike Randall (Brian and Scott), Brett and Kelly Williams (Erin and Matthew), Douglas and Rachel Bawden (Courtney and Troy), all of Helena and Lisa and Kevin Mathews (Lauren and Peter) of Seattle, brothers and sister-in-law, Jack and Bobbie Spurzem of Flesher Pass and Dick Spurzem of Boulder; brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, Ralph and Rosane Williams, Alice Milch, Pearl Spurzem, all of Helena and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at Hagler-Anderson Mortuary December 23, Thursday, 2:00 p.m. with Pastor William Mullette-Bauer officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be grandsons, Brett Williams and Douglas Bawden, great grandsons, Brian Andersen and Scott Randall and nephews, Jack and Bill Spurzem. In liew of flowers the family requests memorials to WestMont Hospice, 2525 Colonial Drive, Helena.
