She died at her home in this township at ten o'clock, last Thursday night, at the ripe old age of 81 years, 3 months and 23 days. She had been ill for about five months and during the last few weeks of her life her sufferings were so intense that she longed for the reward that lies beyond this world of care and pain and suffering, and death was a welcome relief. Her friends knew for several days that the end was near and when the final summons came and the sad message went out, a deep shadow of gloom settled over this community in which she had lived and labored for so many years. We are told that "There Is no death, the stars go down, To rise upon some fairer shore, And bright in Heaven's Jeweled crown, They shine forever more." But now we mourn because she has been taken from our midst, but rejoice that it was not until after her hair had been turned to silvery threads by the frosts of four score winters, not until she had been permitted to live and do good several years beyond the allotted time of man. The lesson that she taught through the simple Christian life that she lived and died should ever serve as an inspiration to all her friends to try and do better, and everyone who knew her was Grandma's friend. She was a true Christian woman in every sense of the word. A charter member of the Presbyterian church of this township, one of its trustees and most loyal supporters. She took a great interest in children and as long as she was able to attend church she taught a class of little ones in the Sunday School. She loved her church. Her last thoughts were of the sacred place, and she provided a means whereby her support of it would be continued after she was gone. She was an active and ambitious woman and her pleasant little home and its surroundings always presented a neat and inviting appearance. It was a home where friendship and hospitality held full sway. She was fond of flowers and the flower beds that she planted and tended with her own hands always attracted much attention and admiration, and it was but fitting that the floral offerings at her bier should have been so profuse. She was a woman of good judgment and broad views and fortunately retained her faculties until the end. She always took a keen interest in all public enterprises and in everything that would tend to elevate the community either socially brought sunshine to many homes. Her kind words and ministrations lightened the burdens of others many times. She never hesitated when her services were needed and we do not believe that there is a family in the community but what can recall some act of kindness that she has done for them in one way or another. In the home she was all that a wife and mother could be and her children will always revere her memory. She had lived in this vicinity for more than forty years, and always at peace with every one, a fact which of itself speaks volumes in her praise, "Life's work well done. Life's race well run, " and now beneath the grassy sods on the beautiful green hill top all that is mortal of the good old Christian mother rests. Margaret H. Vardon was born in the Province of New Brunswick, Canada, on January 19, 1829. When she was eleven years of age her parents moved to Pickering, Ontario, where on March 25, 1847, she was married to Mr. Alfred Noble. In the spring of 1867 they came to Iowa and settled in Castle Grove township, where she continued to reside until her death on May 12, 1910. Her husband preceded her to the better land on January 18, 1892. She is survived by two sons and six daughters as follows: Mrs. Emma McCulloch, of Long Beach, California; Elmer J. Noble, of Castle Grove; Dr. C. M. Noble, of Houston, Texas; Mrs. Hattie Scott, of Chico, California; Mrs. Nellie Deischer, of Castle Grove; and Mrs. Minnie Starr, of Oelwein, Iowa. All of the children, except the son residing in Texas, were with their mother when the end came. The funeral was held from the Presbyterian chapel at 2:30 o'clock on Sunday afternoon and was one of the largest that has been held in this vicinity for some time. The services were conducted by Rev. Innes, of Monticello, assisted by Dr. Parkhill, of Hopkinton, and the remains were interred in the family lot of the Prairie Hill cemetery. Six of her old friends and neighbors acted as her pall bearers as follows: Alson Danks, Michael McLaughlin, Andrew Davidson, A.W. Cramer, J . A. McLaughlin and J. A. Howie. Mrs. Sarah Deischer, one of the pioneer mothers of this township, who has resided in Monticello, for some time, was out to attend the funeral of her old friend and neighbor, Mrs. Noble, and pent a short time with her sons, here. Miss Ruth Starr, of Oelwein, came on Saturday, to be present at her grandmother's funeral. Miss Grace Noble came home from Cedar Rapids, for her grandmother funeral, on Sunday.
