The news of the death of Mrs. Margaret Holland filled the hearts of all who knew her and especially was this true of those who had the pleasure of her acquaintance during the many years she has resided in our city. Nearly thirty-six years ago she and her husband, when in the prime of youth, came to this city to work out their future, buoyant with the hope of life, health and fortune. They located here when Carroll was only a way station on the railroad. Mr. Holland was of a bright, happy disposition, frugal and industrious. He began the work of laying the foundation for better conditions in life and built a little home on the lot now occupied by the Woodward Bros. implement house. They had hardly got located in their home when Mr. Holland died, leaving a widow and three small children to fight the battles of life. Mrs. Holland took up the great burden with her face turned to the East and never once during the struggle through which she was compelled to pass, did she falter. With a firm reliance in Him who cares for the widow and the orphan, she trusted in Him only as one can who has the assurance of hope for better things. The family consisted of two boys and a girl. With a devotion to duty and motherly love she reared this family and in time the daughter was sufficiently educated to engage in the profession of teaching. In a few years she was united in marriage to James Laughlin. It was not long after this that the good mother was called on to pass under the rod, for her daughter, the idol of her dreams, soon took sick and died. This was a great affliction to her and one from which she never fully recovered. The two boys grew to manhood and were married and set up homes of their own and the mother who had so richly earned a needed rest from her labors, made her home with them. She was at the home of her son John at the time of her death. Mrs. Holland was born in Longford, Ireland in 1841. She came to this country with her parents in 1853 and located at Freeport, Ill. There she was married to Jerry Holland and in the spring of 1872 located in Carroll. To this union were born three children. Katie and the two sons John and Jerry. Besides the two sons who are left to mourn her death there are six grandchildren. The funeral was held at St. Joseph church Saturday morning. The departed has been a most devout christian woman and has been one of the staunch members of St. Joseph parish ever since it has been organized in this city. No one of the members has done more or made greater sacrifice for the church than Mrs. Holland who was ever ready to do her duty in whatever capacity she was called. During the years when the parish was making such a great effort to build their present house of worship, Mrs. Holland was always relied on to perform any task that she might be needed to perform. Her memory will live in the hearts of those with whom she was intimately associated and now that she is gone she will be greatly missed. A good mother, and a kind and devout christian woman has answered the last call and has gone to that brighter and better land where the weary are at rest. [Carroll Sentinel: 28 Jan 1908, pg. 1] Funeral of Mrs. Holland Saturday The funeral of Mrs. Margaret Holland, whose death at 7:10 o'clock last week Wednesday evening we briefly noted, occurred from St. Joseph's church at 10 o'clock Saturday forenoon. The attendance of neighbors and friends filled the church. The pall bearers were: C. H. Ludwig, P. J. Hammill, J. P. McAllister, Thos. Boyce, Joe Wall, George Kennebeck. The ladies sodality of the parish of which departed was a devout member attended the funeral in a body. Those from a distance who attended the funeral were: her sister, Mrs. Pat Ryan and daughter Harriet, Rock Rapids, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Mrs. T. H. Kelly, Friend, Neb.; two nephews, James Kelly and Robert O'Callahan, Des Moines; Mrs. Margaret Hatton and daughter Katie and son Mike, Des Moines; E. J. O'Donnell, Sioux City; Mike O'Donnell, Boone, Iowa, and Mesdames T. S. Ryan and M. Mack, Lanesboro, Iowa. The only surviving children are her sons, John and Jerry Holland of this city. Margaret Kelly was born in County Langford, Ireland, 67 years ago. She came to America with her parents in early youth and they settled at Freeport, Ill. There she was married to Jeremiah Holland about 40 years ago. They came to Carroll in May, 1872, and here the husband died June 1st, 1873. Heroically departed devoted herself to the rearing and education of her children and after they had married and had homes of their own, she made her home with her son, John Holland, with whom she lived at the time of her death. Departed at various times in her life was called upon to taste of sorrow's bitter cup. Besides the early death of her husband she was called upon to mourn her daughter Kate, Mrs. J. P. Laughlin, who died 10 years ago last October. Following February her aged mother, Mrs. Margaret Kelly, passed away at the age of 109 years. With a spirit of true christian resignation she accepted her burden of grief as coming from Him Who carried the cross in ignominy for mankind. She offered up her poignant woe in token of sacrifice. Though the burden might seem to crush body and soul, she bore up under every fresh sorrow by the strength derived from a perfect trust in God. She was a model Christian woman, kindhearted and charitable. She was ever ready to help alleviate distress and suffering and with her cheerful encourageing way brought new hope and cheer to sad hearts but lately heavy with despair. Her kind deeds live on though she has passed into the valley of shadows. Though we are not able to penetrate the veil with mortal eye, we feel that those faltering steps have been strengthened as she emerged beyond the reach of human sight. Though cognizance of human frailties make us supplicate for mercy at the foot of the cross, we believe that eternal peace and joy is hers, that she has reached the home of the blessed. Life's dark hour must at last come to us each and all. In turn we sympathize one for the other and pray for divine consolation to sad hearts just called upon to part with a dear one. Though we may long have passed the age of childhood, youth and even middle age; though the ties of wife and children may have absorbed our care and attention. That cord reaching from the years when as a toddler at mother's knee she was all to us, unites us to the heart of her whose love lasts to the brink of the grave -- and beyond if she is able to control destiny by an unquenchable love. That bond between man's heart and that of his mother neither time nor distance can break. It is only when that withered hand drops lifeless from that last clasp, that memory brings back in a flood of recollections all that she was to us as far as the mind runs back to childhood's tender years. It is then we realize that such love can but fittingly be rewarded by Him Who recognized filial duty by a special commandment in His first written law to mankind.
