Leaves Over Seventy Living Descendants – Husband Served in Napoleon’s Army. “Grandma” Bruce, one of the best known old ladies in this community, passed peacefully away Wednesday evening at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Margaret Thomasson, the immediate cause of death being a cold. The good old lady had reached the age of 98 years, and though remarkably strong for one of her years, she was not capable of enduring illness. Deceased was a native of Prussia, and was born September 8, 1800. Her maiden name was Margaret Kline, and before leaving the old country for America she was married to William Bruce. They came to the United States in 1848, and in 1860 to Butte County, and settled on the Thomasson place near Chico. Mr. Bruce died in 1866. Mrs. Bruce, at the time of her death, have seventy-two living descendants, being classified as follows: Four children – John and Mike Bruce, Mrs. Margaret Thomasson and Mary Miller; twenty-eight grandchildren; thirty-eight great grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren. She had five children, who are now dead. William Bruce, her husband, was a soldier under Napoleon Bonaparte. She was a kind hearted old lady, and was a member of the local Catholic church. The funeral will be held from that church this morning at 11 o’clock. ~~~ Chico Daily Record, Friday, February 24, 1899, pg 4 col 1: Grandma Bruce’s Funeral. The funeral of the late “Grandma” Bruce took place yesterday morning at 11 o’clock, the impressive service being conducted by Father Gualco. The attendance was unusually large, for the dear old lady had been a resident of the county for nearly forty years. Father Gualco’s remarks were thoroughly appropriate and had to do with the important events of the life of deceased. The pall bearers were J.G. Murphy, Thos. Murphy, Matt Schwein, C.L. Nelson, Jas. Cain and T.M. Smith.
