For Many Years Engaged in Farming and Stock Raising. Date of Funeral Not Yet Stated. The grim reaper has once again visited our city and taken from our midst one of Chico's oldest and most highly respected citizens. At one o'clock today the spirit of Michael Bruce took its flight, and though his death had been momentarily expected for several says past, the realization that he has passed away is a severe blow to the loving wife and daughters who have been tireless and constant in their attentions, and to the many friends who have day by day watched his decline, powerless to render assistance. "Michael Bruce is a native of Germany, where he was born May 10, 1830, and had he lived until next Friday would have been 71 years of age. In 1837 he came with his parents to America and first located in Kentucky. Here he resided until 1852, when he came to California, settling at Lovelock. After a residence of two years at that place he returned to Illinois where in 1861 he was married to Miss Harriet Moile, and in the latter part of that year returned with his bride to this State. He first located at Sutter Creek where he resided until 1866, when he removed to Chico. Here he has since resided, and up to the past few years he had been engaged in farming and stock raising, in both of which he has been successful. "About twelve years ago, and while in apparently perfect health, Mr. Bruce suffered a stroke of paralysis, but by constant treatment with of best medical skill obtainable, he partially recovered. But again five years ago he suffered a second stroke, and despite constant and tender care and attention, his decline has been gradual but sure. "The past few months of his illness have been day after day of suffering and at times excruciating pain. Yet he has borne his suffering with a fortitude characteristic of the man. 'Mike' Bruce, as he was familiarly known, was a kind and indulgent husband and father and a loyal, faithful friend. Through all of his life there was ever present that vein of charity and loyalty which was so often exemplified when the unfortunate appealed to him for aid. His was a noble character and while the bereaved wife and daughters have lost a loving, kind husband and father, the community in general has lost one of its foremost and most substantial citizens. "He leaves besides the wife, three daughters, Mrs. G.L. Barham and Mrs. J.W. Lightfoot of Chico and Mrs. J.M. White of Stockton; one brother, John Bruce of Chico, and two sisters, Mrs. M. Thomasson of Chico and Mrs. A. Miller of Illinois. "Deceased was a member of the I.O.O.F. with which order he has been connected for the past forty years. The time of the funeral has not as yet been decided upon."
