THANK YOU DIANE, the ABRAHAM and RENARD families are truly grateful for all that your have done to help in the creation of this memorial! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Margaret "Maggie" ABRAHAM was born at home on the family farm in rural Henry County, Iowa during August 1867; the farm was located southeast of the community of Mount Pleasant. Her parents were John McCue and Catharine Margaret (née BARTLETT) ABRAHAM; they had married in Mount Pleasant on February 5, 1865. She was the only daughter and second child of seven children born to John and Catharine. Maggie's six brothers were: Lot William, James Willard, Charles, John E., Arthur, and Roy Clair. During the 1873-1879 Depression, farm prices fell dramatically and Maggie's father ended up in debt. He decided it was best to start afresh by selling out, paying his debts, and moving his family from Iowa to the new territory opening up in Nebraska for homesteaders. During March 1881, the John and Catharine ABRAHAM family removed to the Elkhorn River Valley in Douglas County, Nebraska from Henry County, Iowa. Over the years that followed, the family's 160 acre homestead grew, through hard work and additional purchases of land (as income and opportunity allowed), into 400 acres; they developed the land into a successful cattle ranch. On March 4, 1891, Maggie married a prominent farmer, Frederick "Fred" RENARD Jr., at the home of her parents in Douglas County, Nebraska. They made their home on a farm south of Arlington village in Washington County, Nebraska; their lovely home sat on a hilltop overlooking the valley from the east. Two daughters and four sons were born there: Estelle "Stella" (did not marry), infant son RENARD (he died at birth on March 7, 1893), Edward John (married Greta Ruth MARSHALL June 10, 1919), Elizabeth Catharine (married Leslie Paul STROHL May 16, 1931), Walter Andrew (married Amelia JORGENSEN about 1927), and Otto Adonis (married Lillian A. WALLINGFORD June 2, 1925). Margaret's niece, Ila May (née ABRAHAM) McNAIR, recalled childhood memories of visiting the RENARD's home, located upon a steep hill, with her parents (James Willard and Maud Evelyn (née SUMNER) ABRAHAM) and siblings. She remembered how her Aunt Maggie and Uncle Fred's daughters, Estella and Elizabeth, would always have the big long dining table in their beautifully decorated dining room laden with all kinds of delicious foods awaiting their arrival. The three RENARD sons (Edward, Walter, and Otto) would eagerly be waiting to start eating. Ila recalled what a very enjoyable family the RENARDs were. They were always anxious to have James and Maud's family visit. Ila described her Aunt Maggie as a kindhearted, generous woman with a very loving nature. Mrs. R. O. JONES [Maiden name: Estella Kate "Stella" HAZEN] was called to Arlington, this state, last Thursday evening by the sad news of the death of her cousin, Mrs. Fred RENARD of heart failure. Mrs. RENARD was taken suddenly ill at 3 o'clock Wednesday afternoon and died early Thursday morning. She was fifty-three years of age and leaves her husband and five grown children and two grandchildren. Her death is a deep sorrow to Mrs. JONES. Their mothers were sisters [Margaret "Maggie" HAZEN, née BARTLETT and Catharine ABRAHAM, née BARTLETT] and the two families moved to Nebraska in the early days and were always brought up almost as one family. Her loss is more that of a sister than a cousin. The funeral of Mrs. Fred RENARD of Arlington was held last Saturday [Error: funeral was held Sunday] afternoon, July 17, at the Renard farm home southeast of Arlington. Her death was very sudden having taken sick on Wednesday and passing away early Thursday morning from apoplexy. FUNERAL OF MRS. FRED RENARD A very large number of devoted friends and neighbors paid their last respects to Mrs. Fred RENARD whose funeral took place at Elk City Sunday afternoon [July 17th]. Beautiful and impressive services were held at the family home. Reverend BUSS of the Congregational church delivered a masterful funeral address in which he paid a glowing tribute to womanhood and motherhood in general and to the deceased in particular. All who listened to him were impressed with the grandeur of a noble, useful life devoted to the exalted task of properly rearing a family and maintaining a beautiful, harmonious home as exemplified by the departed. The speaker touched deeply the hearts of his hearers and his words served as an inspiration to better and nobler living while for the mourners they conveyed all the comfort and consolation that it is humanly possible to give at such a time. Beautiful singing added much to the impressive services. A magnificent display of flowers attested to the love and esteem in which the departed was held by all who knew her.
