Murphy on Feb.4, 1867 in Valparaiso, Porter, Indiana. James T. Murphy is teaching school ( physiology and Natural Science) in Valparaiso, Porter, Indiana at the Saint Paul’s Catholic School. James also has a medical practice and is identified as James Murphy MD in the local newspaper. Simon Murphy ( James Brother) is shown as the Principal at St. Paul’s. “The Valparaiso Republican, Thursday Feb. 7, 1867, Pg. 1.” & also “The Valparaiso Republican May 9 1867m page 1, first col. Bottom left. Maggie Harrold was the sister of Simon Murphy’s wife Ellen Harrold. The Harrold Sisters married the Murphy brothers. James & Simon Murphy attended Oberlin College about 1857 to about 1860 and are recorded in the “Oberlin College General Catalog, Students 1833-1908, page 700, 701” as engineering students. Sept. 30, 1870 US Census Lincoln, Lancaster, Nebraska Margaret, James T. and James mother Mary Murphy are living and working in Lancaster, Nebraska. Maggie is keeping house and James T. Murphy is a Surveyor and Civil engineer. In 1872 Margaret and James T. Murphy is referred to as James T. or maybe John , but it is James T….(the confusion in what his name was is due to lack of record keeping on the western frontier in 1872….. anyway, the Murphy brothers, Simon and James T. Murphy build the historic Harrold House named in honor of their wives the Harrold sisters. ( Simon married Ellen Harrold-Margaret’s sister). Simon and Ellen Harrold Murphy and family locate primarily in the Kearney, Nebraska area, Simon is the City engineer and Surveyor and a homesteader and James T. Murphy is recorded as a civil engineer and farmer/homesteader/surveyor-but no record has been found of him practicing medicine in Nebraska- he appears to have left that profession and engaged in homesteading and surveying. Both Murphy brothers were very well educated and had options for employment and work. The noted Nebraska historian Samuel Clay Bassett, reports on the Murphy brothers in “History of Kearney, Nebraska (Part 3) From: Buffalo County, Nebraska and its people, by Samuel Clay Bassett. Records identify the Murphy family owning 3 or 4 different homesteads during their time in Nebraska. In 1883/1884 the James T. Murphy family is found living and working on a homestead near Cody, Nebraska (which was recounted to be one of the most lawless areas of the west) James and Margaret were running rail camp # 29 and it was here that James T. Murphy was murdered by Frenchie Marion . “The Valentine Democrat, Thursday July 8, 1909-“ – this story recounts the Murder of James T. Murphy. After James murder, Margaret runs a boarding house in Valentine, Nebraska ( 1885 US Census ). In 1886-1887 Margaret Harrold Murphy is living in Chadron, Nebraska and is recorded as holding the Catholic Church meetings in her home before the first Catholic Church was built. “The Chadron Record, Dec. 1, 1955, pg 4.”
