Description	:	One of the older citizens of our community, Mrs. William Heit passed away at 11:15 Tuesday morning at St. Joseph's hospital, aged 90 years. Mrs. Heit had been ailing for the last six weeks and on Saturday, March 9, her condition became grave, thus she submitted to an emergency major operation. Mrs. Heit had been ailing for the last six weeks and on Saturday, March 9, her condition became grave, thus she submitted to an emergency major operation. Until her last illness she was always busy, mentally alert and extremely active for one of her years, assuming responsibility and helping with the many little tasks about her home, which she loved so dearly. too, she had always been a great reader and occupied her spare time in this pleasure as late as this last winter. Margaret Papenheim was born September 9, 1855 at Sheboygan, Wisconsin. Her parents, John and Teresa Papenheim came to this county while she was a girl in her early teens. She had attended the public school in Sheboygan and after coming to this locality finished her education in the Parochial school in North Washington. They made the trip by covered wagon and moved onto the old Papenheim place now occupied by Ben Rosonke. January 29, 1878, she was married in North Washington to William Heit. The marriage ceremony was performed by Rev. Fr. Probst, Mr. and Mrs. Heit then locted on the old Heit homestead, south of New Hampton where they lived 42 years. In 1915 they left the farm and moved to the present Heit home on South Linn Ave. On January 27, 1934, her husband passed away. Mrs Heit was always a devout member of the Catholic faith and a member of the Rosary Society. For a time they attended church in North Washington and later worshipped at St. Joseph's Church. A movement was started by the German speaking people to erect and church and school where their children could be educated in the religion. Mr. and Mrs. Heit were very active in this movement, also the founding of St. Mary's church which was completed in 1893. St. Mary's school was built first and completed in 1890. Here they worshipped and gave generously of both their time and money toward the establishment of their church. St. Mary's. which for a time was a mission and it was not until later that they had a resident priest. When one ponders on the sacrifices these early settlers made he can not help but feel a keen appreciation and profound respect for them and the contribution they made for our progress, hard work and planning, only, was responsible for their success. The deceased leaves one daughter, Mathilda and seven sons, William, Frank and Alphonse, who with the sister, had remained at home and Joe, Anton J. and Martin of New Hampton and vicinity and John living in Charles City. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Two children, the eldest son and a daughter, Dorothy preceded her. She was the last remaining member of a family of six, three sisters and two brothers. Rosary services were held from the Larkin chapel Thursday evening, and her funeral was conducted at 9:00 o'clock this Friday morning from St. Mary's church. Rev. Fr. Victor Hintgen read the high mass of requiem and conducted the grave services. Interment was in the family lot in the parish cemetery. Her pallbears were: Martin Houlihan, Ben Holschlag, Hubert Laures, Frank Kipp, William DeBettignies and Alois Papenheim, all old friends of the family. to find gravesite, enter main gate, go all the way to the 'T' intersection, it will be off to the right.
