Mrs. Margaret Ries, a venerable woman, whose residence was on Walnut Avenue South, passed away at her home last Thursday forenoon, Nov. 21, 1912, at ten minutes to eleven. She was aged 71 years, 4 months, 23 days. Mrs. Ries had been a sufferer from heart trouble for many years, but was not at any time considered in serious danger from its effects until the Saturday before her death. On that morning members of the household heard a fall in her bedroom and going to her room found her lying on the floor beside the bed unable to speak. A physician was called and Mrs. Ries seemed to rally during the next two or three days. But the improvement after the first attack was only temporary and on Thursday morning she Sank peacefully into the last earthly sleep. The maiden name of the deceased was Margaret Elenz and she was born at Wolfeles, Kreis Bitburg, Regierungsbezirk Trier, Rhein Province, Prussia, on the 19th day of June, 1841. At the age of 11 years, she came with her people to America, settling at Holy Cross, Dubuque county. She was married to Mr. Michae l Ries in Dubuque county, Nov 23, 1859, and the next February they came with ox teams to Chickasaw county. Mr. Ries having entered land near North Washington. They lived on the old place until a few years ago, when they moved to New Hampton and made their home in the Third ward near St. Mary's Catholic church. Mrs. Ries was the mother of seven children, five of whom survive her as follows: Mrs. Susanna Ungs, Mrs. John Hentges, M.P. and Matt Ries, all of North Washington, and Mrs. Peter Birgen of New Hampton. Two sons, Jacob and John B. preceded their mother in death. The funeral was held at St. Mary's Catholic church Saturday morning, Mass for the dead being read by the pastor, Rev. B.H. Forkenbrock, and the burial was in the parish cemetery. Mrs. Ries was a fine Christian woman and lived a devout life. She shared fully in the toils and the hard struggles of the early days, and labored with earnestness and a loving heart to help provide for the children under her care. These have lost the one dear friend of all the world and in their sorrow they have the sympathy of many friends. Miss Margaret Elenz was born June 29, 141, at Walfeles, Kries Bittburg, Phine Province. In 1852, she, with her parents, came to the USA and settled in Dubuque county near New Vienna. Here she grew to womanhood and on Nov 23, 1859, was married to Michael Ries at Holy Cross. The following spring they moved to Chickasaw county, settling on a farm near North Washington, where they continued to reside until sixteen years ago. Mr. Ries died April 26, 1911. To this union seven children were born: John, who died when twelve years of age, and Jacob, who died in February, 1905, Mrs. Peter Ungs and Michael Ries both of North Washington, Mathias on the homestead, Mrs. Peter Birgen of this city and Mrs. John Hentges of North Washington. Besides her children, she leaves one brother, Matt Elenz of New Vienna, three sisters, Mrs. Barbara Thill of Winona, Minnesota., Mrs. Nick Schuster of New Vienna and Mrs. Mary Deyen of Dyersville. New Hampton Courier November 28, 1912 - Volume 52, No. 48, Page 1, Col 4 ------------------------------------------------------------ Miss Margaret Elenz was born in Rhein Province, Prussia, June 29th, 1851, came to this country with her parents and settled in Dubuque county in this state April 9th, 1852, and was wooed and won and became the wife of Michael Ries Nov. 23rd, 1859, at Holy Cross, Iowa. Seven children came to this home, two of whom passed to the other side before the parents; the husband, Michael Ries died in April 1911. The children who survive her are: Mrs. Anna Ungs, Mrs. John Hentges and M.P. Ries of Washington township and Mrs. Peter Birgen of this city. The deceased was an excellent wife and mother, a good Christian woman who looked well after her family and reared them to honorable citizenship; a good neighbor and kindly woman whose life measured up to the standard of a real mother and womanly woman. The funeral was held from St. Mary's church, Saturday, Nov 23rd, 1912, the pastor, Rev. B.H. Forkenbrock, officiating and the interment was in St. Mary's cemetery beside her husband. Card of Thanks.
