Since the birth day was unimportant to them, when they did have to provide a date (such as for military service or immigration) it was not unusual to use something other than their actual birth date (often using their Namenstag or another day that was important in the church or to the family). It's likely many German-Catholic's did not know their actual birth date. Further, since the religious did not tend to celebrate their civil marriages at all (as they did not consider themselves wed until the religious ceremony), I doubt these birth days were changed just to coincide with the civil ceremony, but more likely the civil ceremony was on the 2nd because the 2nd already had some significance and the birth days were changed for the same reason.
