Read More	Researched and compiled by the Kartchner Brothers A Descendant of the Kartchner/Wilcox family of Philadelphia To more accurately state Margaretta's name and marital history: Margaretta "Kartchner" [nee Webb] Purvis. Unsourced family history suggests that Margaret married James Webb on 14 May 1834 at Marion Twp, Berks Co, Pennsylvania. An illustration of how Margaret's younger brother, William, viewed her was during a 1846 encounter - near St Louis, MO - possibly running a hotel: "sister and her family all well, but very proud, we were beneath her notice". William's first wife, would later described her as - "proud and haughty" and considering them as "scarcely worth any notice from her". [Sources - William Decatur Kartchner Journal, Life Sketch of Margaret J. Casteel Kartchner] In the 1850 Federal Census, the Webb family were found listed with her younger sister's family and her mother in Ste Genevieve, Beauvais County, MO at which time James was listed as a Blacksmith and they are listed with four of their children. Supposedly her first husband, James Webb died during the early 1850's and Margaret married John Purvis on 18 October 1854 in St Louis [St Louis, Missouri Marriage Records Volume/Page: 11 438]. The 1856 Iowa State Census revealed that John and Margaret Purvis were living in Elk, Delaware County (no children listed with them) living near some of her grandchildren. It noted that John was born in Ireland, a stone cutter. It noted that they had been in Iowa for 3 years. (Just above them on this census were the parents of Daniel Rees, Stroud and Christiana Rees.) Iowa State Census Roll IA-52 Page 758, Lines 3-4 It appears that in 1860, John and Margaret Purvis were living in Beale TWP, Juniata Co, PA [M653-1119 Page 494] John Purvis died earlier in 1870 - possibly in New Orleans and it was the 1870 Iowa Mortaility Index that revealed "Purvis, Margaretta, 55, female, widowed died Apr 1870 in Independence Township, Jasper Co. Cause : Epilepsy. The listed place of birth did not match, but most everything else matches the information available for Margaret. At the time of her death is was noted to have a family of 5 - which matches her surviving children. [Source : Jasper County Iowa Mortality Index] Her known children were: Hannah 1836-bef 1850 Sarah A [Reese] Alexander 1838-1912, George M. 1841-1916 Forest S. 1846-1852 Rebecca 1849-bef 1856 Note: It has been suggested that her first husband, James Webb died during the early 1850's - but it is possible that he abandoned her. In a city directory for St Louis, both a ‘James Webb' and ‘John Purvis' were listed. No burial record can be found for James Webb about this time, nor for Rebecca (although the St Louis City Cemetery Record had several entries that could reflect her burial). This reference, the "St Louis City Cemetery Record (Vol. B, Pg 103)", did have Forest S. listed. [Researched and compiled by the Kartchner Brothers]
