Read More	Researched and compiled by the Kartchner Brothers A Descendant of the Kartchner/Wilcox family of Philadelphia To more accurately state Sarah's name and marital history: Sarah Ann "Webb" [nee Reese] Alexander. Sarah was the second child/daughter of James and Margaret (Kartchner) Webb - her father was born in England. It appears that her family was constantly on the move. Uncertainty about the state in which she was born has been noted in the previously researched family history, the only census record found for her family was in 1850 [Beauvais, Ste Genevieve Co, Missouri] noted that she was born in Illinois. Personal accounts about her suggest that it was Chambersburg, Pennsylvania which is located in the center of Franklin County, Pennsylvania. Her siblings were Hannah, George, Forest and Rebecca. Of these five children born, only she and her brother, George M. reached majority. It is not clear whether her father died or left the family sometime between 1850 and 1854 but it is known that her mother married twice, the second time to John Purvis. The following description of Sarah was provided by a granddaughter: "5' 3" - 140 lbs, Blue-grey eyes, brown hair. Very religious. Methodist. Became blind at 58. Practical nurse & midwife. Spent great deal of time with sick always refusing pay. Frequent spells of religious ecstasy, dropping to knees she would pray as she rolled from side to side. Biblical quotations would pour from her lips. Extremely grateful and appreciative woman. Loving, kindly, always generous, she devoted her life to those in need". Her first husband, Daniel Reese was born in 1833 in Pennsylvania (Stroudsburg, Northampton County - now Monroe County) and was the son of Stroud and Christiana (Buttz) Rees. This branch of the Rees/Reese family supposedly arrived in British North America from Wales in September 1682- settling in Doylestown, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania - reportedly on lands purchased from William Penn agents in Wales. This union produced five children. 1856 Iowa State Census, she (17) and Daniel (23) were in Elk, Delaware Co, IA [Iowa State Census Roll IA-52 Page 785, Lines 14-15]. It noted that she had only been in the state about one year. 1860 Census, they were in Jasper Co., Iowa with two sons and her grandmother Prudence living with them. Daniel enlisted in the Civil War and died in May 1865. In 1866, she married her second husband Richard Alexander, the eldest son/second child of Isaac N. and Nancy (Hurless) Alexander. It appears that he was born August 18, 1824, at Conotton, Harrison County, Ohio. This union produced eight children. Milton W McKeever 1906) Unnamed [1885-1885 Obituary - Sarah A Alexander Sarah Ann Webb was born at Chambersburg, Pa., November 19, 1838, and was the daughter of James and Margaretta Webb, and was one of a family of five children, all of whom preceded her in death but a brother, G.M. Webb, of Marshalltown. She was married to Daniel Reese at Yankee Settlement, Iowa, June 17, 1855, and came to Jasper County, settling within three miles of her late home, in Poweshiek township. Newton was then the nearest town, but most of the trading was done at Fort Des Moines, the round trip requiring two days. Four children were born to her union with Mr. Reese: C.J. Reese and Mrs. Emma Seeley of Woodbine, W.M. Reese and G.B. Reese of Davenport. Daniel Reese enlisted in the civil war and died from disease contracted in the service and was buried at sea off the coast of Virginia, near Fortress Monroe, May 11, 1865, never reaching home to see his youngest child, thus leaving his wife a widow with four children to support and rear. April 9, 1866, she was married to Richard Alexander, and to this union eight children were born, three died in infancy. The surviving children are Mrs. Susie Buckley, Mrs. Tina Barker, J.R. Alexander, Mrs Anna Whitehead, and Mrs Isabel McKeever. At an early age, she united with the church and contributed largely to the building of Plummer Grove Chapel, and for years was class leader and Sunday school superintendent until about ten years ago, when she lost her sight and was unable to take an active part in church service, although her faith has remained first and she was a member of the Methodist Church in Colfax. Richard Alexander died July 5, 1904, since when, up to the date of her death on Sunday morning January 6, she had made her home with her son, J.R. Alexander, dissolution resulting from a stroke of apoplexy earlier in the week. Funeral was from the home at 11 a.m. Monday, January 8, conducted by Rev. Williams of Mingo, interment at McKeever cemetery. Mrs. Alexander leaves to mourn her departure 9 children, 28 grand-children, 11 great grand-children and a host of neighbors and friends.
