She was the oldest child of John and Jane McKibbin Duffield and the oldest grandchild of James, Sr., and Margretha Byerly Duffield, pioneers who came to Iowa in 1837. Margaretta Jane Duffield was born March 20, 1849, on a farm in Van Buren county, Iowa. She was the oldest child of John and Jane McKibbin Duffield and the oldest grandchild of James, Sr., and Margretha Byerly Duffield, pioneers who came to Iowa in 1837. Being a pioneer baby she was born in a log cabin built by her father at the foot of the old clay hill leading to the home of her grandparents. Later she moved with her parents to their established home about a quarter of a mile north of her birthplace where she lived until her marriage to Henry N. Megrath on October 25, 1876. With her husband she made her home in a log cabin on a part of the old Claypoole farm about one-half mile east of the Duffield homestead. This farm they purchased at the time of their marriage. She lived within a radius of a mile of her birthplace the majority of her life. The last few years of her life have been spent in Keosauqua and about one year in California. From early childhood she was a member of the Presbyterian church and attended the old Presbyterian church near her birthplace until moving to Keosauqua, when she and her husband attended the Methodist church. Her husband, with whom she lived for forty-two years, died November 12, 1928. Having no children of their own they took in his young boyhood, Emory Jones, an orphan, and raised him to young manhood. She died January 30, 1934, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J.J. Moore, and their daughter, Mrs. Foster, who gave to her during her last illness their tender care. She leaves to mourn her going her sister, Mrs. Charles Casner of Monrovia, Calif., her brother, Henry Duffield, of Portland, Ore., and other relatives and friends. Two brothers, George and Orin preceded her in death. She loved her home, her dear ones and an eulogy could be written of her worth as daughter, wife, foster-mother, sister, neighbor and friend for she was one of God's gently, worthy women. Funeral services will be at the M.E. church this afternoon (Thursday) at 1:30 in charge of Rev. M.E. Hayes, assisted by Rev. H.C. Irvine of Birmingham. Burial at Pittsburg. Source: Van Buren Co.
