She lived to be 80 years old and had enjoyed good health untill last May she was paralised, she and Lewis both enjoyed goodhealth and often spoke of you, he is now living with one of his daughters. I was so sorry none of us saw your daughter when she was in Balto. or knew she was there, I never heard it until after Leave died. Can't you bring Virginia with you, we would be so glad to see her. She used to write such nice letters to Mother when I was a girl, we felt like we were as well acquainted with her as with you and we would all love to see her. Ben can you imagine Nora and myself real old with white hair and wrinlkled faces, when you saw us last we looked very different. I have forgotten what year you left Maryland but I don't think it was long after the death of James Lewis, and I belive he died in 1852, that would be 59 years next fall. Many, many changes has taken place in our family since that time. Now Ben when you read this letter I want you or Virginia to answer it right away and tell me what time you are coming, when you get to Baltimore take the York Road Street Car, and go to Irvington 305 Collins Avenue, there you will find the home of Leave's oldest daughter, Mrs. M. E. Smith, and her father Lue Alton then ask some of them to drop us a card when you will come to St. Mary's and we will meet you at the boat at Millstone wharf, Don't fail to answer this right away, or I will not know you ever received it. May 13, 1912 My dear Ben and Virginia You didn't know I had planned to visit you this summer. Yes after we received your letter saying you had abandoned the idea of visiting us, Helen, our single daughter, proposed that she and I visit you, but after our plans were made, Mr. Shermantine was taken ill, and for several months he was very bad off, in Jan. he went up and staid some weeks with our son, who treated him, and he got a little better, he then came home but soon became worse than ever; than on the 11th day of April Bob came home and took his papa home with him and he has gotten home again, and seems to be getting much better at this time. So now we have abandoned the proposed visit, and as the 27th of may is my birthday and being on that day 74 years old I am too old ever to think of getting farther from home that Balto County and City, but if we never meet on earth lets try to meet in heaven, where there will be no more parting; We have just finished planting our corn, we are a little late this time owing to so much rain, our tobacco plants are fine, and will be ready to plant by the time we can have the land ready, Ben do you use tobacco in any form I dont think you do I have often spoken of Mothers boys she had six and raised five who never used tobacco in any form nor ever drank intoxicants, or ever cursed or swor, and now thay are all gone except yourself. I hope you and Virginia are both having real good health, I am glad you have a daughter at home with you, I learned from Mollie Alton Smith that her sister Anna is now in Missouri and expects to hunt you up befor she comes to Balto. again, I think she is traveling saleslady. This past winter was a very hard one snow, ice, rain, and freeze continually, and Mr. Shermantine being sick and the future looking dark and gloomy, I did not feel like having young poultry so was late in setting my hen, and by that means I only have about 150 young ones, expect to set some hens this evening, I dont believe we will have very much fruit this time it was injured or killed by the cold in April, wheat is looking very well. You asked to know who was living near the old home, but there is no one that you ever knew. Our old place we moved from, was bought by a gentleman from Pennsylvania by the name of Shade, he is now dead and its owned by one of his sons, Laura Bohanan Uncle Johns daughter who married a McKay owns Newport the name you knew it by, they have a store there and Alfred Sanner Serenas second son, owns and lives on Park Hall Aleck Martins farm, Frank Bohanan Uncle Johns third son owns Wallace's place, or Bensons, made much change and had this house built out near the three notch road, indeed Ben nearly everybody that you once knew is dead and property chaanged to strangers, where Ben Magill owned, is now owned by a stranger, named Blick. You know all of Serena's boys are dead except Alfred, Nora makes her home with us, and is real well. She and Helen raise turkeys and I raise the chickens. Helen is a great sewer, she takes in dresses to make and is busy now. Please write again real soon. Much love for all. Sister Maria Mr. Shermantine not being able to attend to the farm himself, our grandson Howard Bennett has it in charge this year, he is our second daughters son, Virginia dont you and Ben neglect sending us your pictures, we want to see you both.
