Description	:	John Henry immigrated with his parents and siblings to the US on 11 Jun 1847. There is speculation that he also immigrated in 1845 or 1846 to look at prospective land in Iowa for his family prior to their immigration. John went back to Germany again presumably to tie up the family’s financial business and perhaps to also bring his “sweetheart”, Sibilla Meir, back with him. John Henry returned to the US on 14 Sep 1850. Sibilla’s family “vehemently” objected to her leaving Germany. However due to her short hair in the photo, the ship manifest was looked at more carefully and an entry was found for a MALE, age 28 named MAIER, M. VICTOIRE. Sibilla’s full birth name was Maria Sibilla Victoria. It appears she disguised herself as a man and traveled to the US with John Henry incognito. When John Henry and Sibilla arrived in Iowa in October 1850, to avoid embarrassment to the family, they were immediately whisked off to the nearest priest to be married. ************************************************ On Saturday, March 12, occurred the death of Mrs. Maria Kann nee Mier. Mrs. Kann was born in Euskirchen, Regierungsbezirk Köln, November 12 1821 and was 76 years old at the time of her death. She came to Jefferson township in 1850 and was married the same year to Henry Kann. Six children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Kann, 2 sons and 4 daughters. Two of the children died when they were young. The surviving children are Gottfried, living in Jefferson township, Mrs. Welling of Guttenberg, Mrs. Frank Schoulte, of Read Township, and Mrs. Bohnekamp, who resides in the western part of Iowa. The funeral was held Monday forenoon at 9 a.m. from St. Mary's church, Rev. Brinkman, officiating. The remains were laid to rest in the Kann cemetery. Mrs. Kann was a woman who had the love and respect of everyone who had the pleasure of knowing her; she leaves a host of sorrowing relatives and friends to mourn her departure from their midst.
