The dead: Roy Kelsey, 54, former Brown county teacher. Mrs. Marie Kincaid Hayes, 59, wife of O. E. Hayes, former Ripley banker. Mr. Kelsey was killed instantly. Mrs. Hayes died Friday nite in Mt. Carmel Hospital, Columbus,* without regaining consciousness. Critically injured in the accident were Mr. Kelsey's wife, Mary Klinker Kelsey, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Klinker, Ripley, and Homer Long, 38, service station operator at Mt. Sterling, Ohio, driver of one of the cars. Both are in Mt. Carmel hospital. Mrs. Kelsey sustained numerous cuts and bruises, a broken left leg and possible internal injuries. She will probably be in the hospital for several weeks. Long had one arm broken, collar bone fractured, and received multiple cuts and bruises. Mr. and Mrs. Kelsey and Mrs. Hayes were enroute to Ripley and all were in the front seat of the Kelsey car. Long was driving north toward Columbus. Long Faces Serious Charges. Long is alleged to have been over the center line when the head-on crash occurred. Both of the cars were virtually demolished and were 135 feet apart when they came to rest on different sides of the road. Sheriff Hays stated he would prefer serious charges against Long within the next few days. Kelsey's body was taken to a Washington C. H. funeral home, while the three injured were removed to the office of a Washington C. H. physician for first aid and then taken to the Columbus hospital. News of the tragedy reached Ripley and Brown county late Tuesday evening and brought sorrow to a wide circle of friends of the former Brown countians who figured in the wreck. Mrs. Hayes Sardinia Native; Mrs. Marie Kincaid Hayes was born at Sardinia, Ohio October 12, 1885, the daughter of George and Martha Cross Kincaid. Her husband, E. O. Hayes, with the Smaller War Plants Corporation in Cleveland, was for many years cashier of the Ripley National Bank. They moved to Cleveland about eight years ago. During their residence in Ripley, Mrs. Hayes was prominent in church and social life of the community. She was organist at the Presbyterian church for ten years and was a former president of the Progress Club. She was a member of the Eastern Star of Sardinia and affiliated with numerous other organizations. Surviving are her husband, one daughter, Mrs. Arthur Theilan, Cincinnati, and two brothers, Brice and Richard, Washington, D. C. The body was returned to the R. W. Kirkpatrick home in Ripley from which funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock with the Rev. Irvin Shudlick officiating. The body was then taken to Sardinia for burial, additional services being held at the Beam Funeral Home there. She had voluntarily given 500 hours to Federation of Women's Clubs Civilian Service Corps. Published in the News Democrat, Georgetown, OH, July 12, 1945
