When Grandpa and Grandma Crandall first came to South Dakota they lived in what they called a dugout. It just had a dirt floor. They planted flowers there that bloomed every year. Later on our Dad used it for an ice house until he built a new one. Our mother went to school in the little red school house, but it burned down in a prairie fire. Grandpa Phenias homesteaded in Jefferson Township, Loretta, South Dakota. It was Dakota Territory when they homesteaded, they built a big house, which all of us kids were born in. Dad and Mother lived in it until they died. Grandpa, Grandma Crandall, Sarah Crandall, Sylvia (Cronkite) Hover, (Sarah & Betsey (Hover) Crandall's mother), and my brother, Arthur Oliver all went to McMinnville, Oregon in 1894. Grandpa came back first. Arthur went to school his first years in Oregon. Pa used to write letters to him, they will be found on Stephen Oliver's Card 4. After Grandpa came back from Oregon, he made cough syrup and also salve to put on horses legs when they got sore. Then he sold it around the country. He was a democrat and he liked to argue politics. Grandpa made Arthur a shirt and a suit once, so he could sew too. During World War I, Grand ma knitted socks for the Red Cross and taught Loren how to knit socks. There was a write up in the Avon Clarion that she was the oldest lady and had knitted the most socks. Marion said, Quote, "Back in 1911 or 1912, I kept house for Arthur (my brother) for a year or two. It was about a mile and one half from our home place, I used to walk there often. Pa's folks in Beloit, Wisconsin used to send us a box of gifts for Christmas, and I got a doll once, the only doll I ever had. I named her Pansy. Then I left it in Grandma's chair and she sat on it and broke its head off. My mother got me a new head for the doll but it didn't have any hair, just painted hair. The little church where we went to church used to have a nice program, a big Christmas tree. We would get a big sack of candy and nuts. Our mother use to help getting them ready. That was always a big night for us kids. Rev. Walter Scott was the Pastor, at one time he lived on a farm south of the church. In early years the place belonged to Uncle Melvin and Sarah (Hover) Crandall. Every two weeks one summer, my sister, Sarah, and I took Music (Piano) lessons from Mrs. Walter Scott. We would carry a 5# jar of butter to pay for our lessons. My oldest sister, Mabel, took lessons from a lady in Springfield, a Mrs. William. Her husband was a dentist there at the time. My brother, Loren, took violin lessons from a Mrs. Blair, they lived down by the creek where the old Andres Store used to be and there was also a flour mill there too. Our Dad had a blacksmith shop there at Andres at one time, after we came back from Beloit, 1895. Indians use to stop at our place. I remember mother said if they came in and she didn't watch them, they would take her fresh bread. We used to make lots of ice cream in the summer time. Many times an ice cream social was held for the church out on our front lawn. We kids all went to the Hitt School except for Loren, who went to the Drake School. We lived two and one half miles from school and had to drive a one horse carriage. Sometimes our horse, Molly, would get loose and go home, then our Dad would have to bring her back. One time my sisters, Edna and Sarah and I turned the corner to fast and upset the carriage. The horse fell down. That was lucky for us, we only got a few bumps on our heads, and no more school for us that day. 1980, many years have passed and now there are only three of us left, myself, my oldest sister, Mabel (Oliver) Luke, and Loren Oliver. So when we go our children and grandchildren will carry on.
