She said her mother Amy Urilla (Crandall) Oliver, wife of Stephen Oliver, was born in Iowa, she had a twin brother, he died at birth. She had two sisters, Effie died before Ma was born, Ruth was the oldest she married and had a family and lived in Guthrie, Iowa. Ma was a large woman and had large eyes and was a fisty woman. She was kind to us children. 1892 Phineas and wife, Betsey (Hoover) Crandall, and Sarah (Hoover) Crandall and young Arthur Oliver age 6, my older brother, left for Oregon. Arthur was gone for 6 or 7 years to McMinnville, Yamhille County, Oregon where the Crandall's had a homestead. Arthur was gone so I, (Mable Oliver) had to help with the chores, such as milking cows and other chores. Arthur and Charles were older than I. Charley who died at age 21 of pneumonia and is buried at the Old Wagner Cemetery, anyway he looked just like his father, fair and thin. Arthur was more chubby, Freddie and Laura died in infancy and buried in the same cemetery. Betsey Crandall, my grandma, Phineas' wife was different, she lived with her daughter in Iowa most of the time. She used to hold brother Loran on her lap all the time, and wouldn't let my son, Earl or any of the kids touch any of Loren's toys or anything. I lived in South Dakota all my life except for the time we were in Beloit, WI. In 1910 after my first child was born, Bernice, we took the train and moved to our homestead or claim at Faith, Meade County, SD. We lived in a sod house, I couldn't let Bernice crawl because it was a dirt floor. We had to live on the claim a year. We moved back to Avon, SD. We sold the claim in later years. We bought a farm out northwest of Tyndall and lived there till we retired and bought a house in Tyndall. When Art died I sold my little house and moved in with Norma. I got gangrene in my foot and had to have my leg taken off above the knee, so I went to the Tyndall Nursing home where I had more care. In 1894 we took a trip to Beloit, Wisconsin, where my father's family lived. I never enjoyed it there, because Uncle Charley's daughter was in a wheelchair and I had to take care of her, she had polio and was crippled, and they expected me to take care of her, which was no fun. We just stayed that summer. Brother Loren and his wife, Agnes also lived in Beloit for a while but returned to Yankton. I will now tell about my husband's side of the family. I remember Rebecca (Hewitt) Luke, Art's grandmother, she used to sit on her haunches by the door with her pipe in her mouth, she was ashamed of herself and the old pipe, so she would try to hide her pipe, no teeth to hold the pipe. She died right after we were married, which was 1908 and she died 1911 and was buried in the Old Wagner Cemetery. Grandma, Nellie Victoria Barnes, wife of Thomas Robert Luke, she was a short chubby woman, my husband's parents. He went by RT or Tom Luke. He was a farmer and bought and sold hogs. He had trucks to haul the hogs to Sioux City, Iowa. RT decided to buy a quarter section of land for each of his children. The first place he bought was where Ernest & Grace (Luke) Kibble lived. Then he sold it and got an enourmous price for it and went land crazy. He bought and bought. He bought another place that Ernie & Grace lived on, the Old Hard Luck ranch where the Sanborn's lived, and Robb lived there. He then bought where Fred & Sussie Luke lived, north of Avon. He had the old homestead, 160 acres, and the Tree claim 160 acres. We lived on the old homestead and farmed the land and took care of the tree claim. RT lost all his land and everything, because he had no money to pay for them. We had 160 acres of land that my husband mortgaged to help RT pay for his land. Art lost his farm because trying to help his father out. RT went into debt and the bottom dropped out and everything was lost. We moved to a rented farm south of Tyndall.
