Read More	Wife of Roy Curtis OBITUARY THE CHARITON HERALD-PATRIOT Chariton, Iowa Thursday, October 5, 2006 MARIE CURTIS Elsie Marie Baker was born February 15, 1902 on a farm northeast of Norwood, Iowa. She was the fifth child of Taylor and Alvie Baker. She grew up on a farm east of Norwood United Methodist Church and attended Norwood school, graduating from there in 1922. There she played basketball from eighth through twelfth grade at the time of playing outdoors on a dirt court with two players playing in each of three sections of the court. After graduation, she taught at a country school in Warren County until forced into retirement upon her marriage to her childhood sweetheart, Roy Curtis on February 23, 1924. To that union a daughter, Mary Lavina, was born. Marie became a typical farm wife and mother until the board of the Puckerbrush School approached her in 1945 to once again become a teacher due to a shortage of teachers during WW II. Back in the classroom she never looked back, teaching a total of 29 years with a majority of them as a fifth and sixth grade teacher at the Southeast Warren School District. During this period she attended night and weekend classes at Drake University, graduating with a bachelor's degree in education. Five years after Roy's death in 1966 she moved to Chariton where she was employed at both Piper's and Ben Franklin Stores. She remained in her own home until one month ago when, due to failing health, she moved to the Chariton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center where she lived until her passing. Fiercely independent, she continued to drive until she was 91 and did her own yard work until she was 98 years old. She spent her days working puzzles and talking on the phone although her favorite pastime was to stand and look at the front door and window. Marie, or "Granny" as her grandkids called her, lived a remarkable life, witnessing many changes. She saw it all and remembered most of it. When asked her secret to liviing a long life she would say "hard work, clean living and a positive attitude." Her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren were her pride and joy. She is survived by one sister, Lola Hayes and her husband, John, Moline, Ill.; a daughter, Mary Sandy, Chariton; grandsons, Dr. James (Beth) Sandy, Corydon, Dr. William Sandy (Pam) Sandy, Holdrege, Neb., and Lee (Pam) Sandy, Russell; nine great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and friends. Services were September 29, 2006 at Fielding Funeral Home. Her first grandson, Jim Sandy, who was born on her birthday, provided special music. Pallbearers were her great-grandsons and honorary pallbearers were the rest of her great-grandchildren. Interment was in the Norwood Cemetery.
