Heusinkveld (copyright 1999). Note: the name of Bohn Cemetery is incorrect. The cemetery marker name is spelled incorrectly; Bohn Cemetery is in the Rolling Cove No. 1 area of Lake Rathbun. It is in the west part of Sect. 19, T-70N, R-18W. It is on the shore of the lake, east of the camping area and on the west side of the road running north from the boat dock, and is easily visible from the road. With the construction of Rathbun Dam and Reservoir in about 1968, the Army Corps of Engineers had to acquire land for the Rathbun Reservoir and flood plain. There were several existing cemeteries on the land. The Corps preserved them with a 5 foot chain link fence around each. The Bohm Cemetery is one of these. The fenced area is about 15 feet square. Written abt. 2005 - Interviewed Deloris Bohm wife of John David Bohm The Bohm Cemetery is located at Rathbun Lake and visitors can take a look at it. After entering Rolling Cove, you turn east and then left when you see the iron fence. there is only one gravestone, that of Barbara Bohm. The cemetery's story is full of local history, and Deloris Bohm, 83,tells the story well. In 1853, George and Barbara Bohm came to the United States from Alsace-Lorraine, which belonged to Germany at the time. Not too long after their arrival, George died in Virginia and Barbara brought their three sons, Joe, John and George, to Iowa. Note: Delores' recollection was incorrect regarding George. 1870 Census show George in Appanoose County. After Barbara's death, George went to Pittsburg to live with his son Joseph and later died of Asthma in 1884 - Marty John Enoch bought a farm in Appanoose County, and fought in the Civil War. His grandson was John David Bohm, who became the husband of Deloris. "When Johnny and I got married, his grandfather John and wife's picture was hanging on the wall in back of us. I had him take that down because I didn't want that big old-fashioned thing in the background of my wedding pictures," Deloris recalled, smiling. Johnny and Deloris knew each other from childhood. They were born and raised in the neighborhood known as North Bend where a church and school once stood. They weren't more than just friends, until after Johnny served in World War II. When he came back home, they began dating and married within six months. "Someone said that was too soon, but I said we'd known each other all our lives! We used to go to the Bohm Cemetery when it was part of the family farm, before the lake was built. I remember one day Johnny told me to come see all the flowers blooming on his great-grandmother's grave. They were planted there right after she died and they bloomed every year. After they built the lake, the flowers disappeared," said Deloris. She said they were pink roses and very pretty. Nothing was left of their farm, either, when the lake went in. a man came one day with an offer to buy it and said they had no choice but to sell. "We didn't want to do it, but there was nothing else we could do. So we had to go look for another farm and found one just east of Knoxville. So we moved up there," she says. "They moved our house over by Walnut City where it still stands with weeds growing up around it. It still make me sad." Her husband, Johnny, died four years ago and Deloris returned to Centerville into her assisted living apartment. "I was already in one up there and Johnny was in the Knoxville VA hospital when he died,," she said. Deloris recalled there is a 12-year old girl buried in the cemetery at Rolling Cove, but no one remembers who she belonged to and there is no stone on the grave. But that's not all. There is also a man's foot buried there. "George Edward Bohm, a cousin from Michigan, came to help mow hay and the mower cut his foot off," said Deloris. "They all decided they should bury his foot in the Bohm Cemetery. He eventually became a lawyer and has returned to visit his foot's grave a time or two." Deloris has a sister living at Maple Grove, too. Since Deloris was never able to have children of her own, she says her sister's children also visit her when they come. Deloris Bohm is one of the last area residents to remember the history of the Bohm family cemetery. The cemetery sign in the background is spelled wrong.
