Burial will be in McClusky City Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 2 to 7 p.m. today at Hertz Funeral Home, McClusky. Marie was born Sept. 2, 1910 south of Drake. She was the daughter of Christian and Sophie (Brandt) Hirschkorn. She grew up and attended rural school near Drake. She moved with her family to the Goodrich and McClusky area and attended the McClusky Public School. Marie met and married the love of her life, John P. Gross on June 8, 1933, at Fessenden. They lived and farmed near Chaseley. Together they had four children, Dellas, Joyce, Alvin and Ida. In 1952 they relocated the family to a farm near McClusky. John died on May 20, 1958. Her son Dellas then returned home after being honorably discharged from the army to assist Marie in the farming operation until she remarried. Marie married Herbert Engel on Jan. 18, 1961, at McClusky. They retired and moved into Turtle Lake in 1969. Herbert died on Jan. 8, 1986. She moved to McClusky in 1988 and resided in Parkview Apartments. After seeing many of her friends relocate to the Sheridan Memorial Home in McClusky, Marie decided she was ready to make that her home. She lived happily there for over three years and considered the staff as family. Marie was a member of the McClusky Seventh-day Adventist Church. Anyone who knew Marie knew of her unshakable, total faith and dedication to Christ. She enjoyed crocheting, quilting, embroidering and baking. She generously shared her handiwork with her family and friends. She also enjoyed parakeets as pets. Marie is survived by one son and two daughters-in-law, Alvin and Ilean Gross, McClusky, Iris Gross, Morristown, S.D.; two daughters and two sons-in-law, Joyce and Rodney Opdahl, Landa and Ida and Joe Dugan, Zap; 15 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; her brother, Herbert Hirschkorn, Stockton, Calif. Marie was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, John and Herbert; her son, Dellas Gross; her grandson, Larry; her great-grandsons, Kasy and Chayne; four brothers, John, Reinhold, Albert and Fred; and four sisters, Martha, Ida, Hilda and Hanna.
